Avatars, those little pix by member's usernames in the forum or comments, are easy to set up. If you are signed in, all you have to do is to go here, and make a choice from the available pix, or upload your own! They are neatly organized into categories for your browsing enjoyment.
You can also manage your avatar from your user control panel, found at the top left of the community area of LCE under "User CP."
