I don't know if this subject has been replied on but here goes.... I am not the most agile person on the block. If I get on the floor it may take me a while to get back up. I also have arthritis in my middle and lower back. Just bending over the wrong way will throw my sacreliac (sp ?) out. Does anybody have any exercises that I could do standing up or sitting down that may not put me out of action . I know that if I do some abdominal strengthing this may help the back problem. Any suggestions ?

Try things like Isometric exercises, for instances sitting straight in a chair with your elbows up at right angles from your sides and your hands pressed against each other in front of you, and pushing one against the other... or pulling your stomach in for a count of ten as you sit upright in the chair, or Kegals (sp?) the 'pregnancy exercise we all know and love, lol'... walking is great exercise, start off SLOW, a block a day if that's all you can handle (it can be hard on the back) but even that block will get you MOVING... and eventually you can build up to two blocks, then three etc... if you have lightweight dumbells you can do some arm weight exercises that can be done while sitting in a chair. Don't be so hard on yourself that you can't move the next day, but don't be so easy on yourself that you don't even break a sweat either. You are the best judge of your limits, just be sure you're not giving yourself too many excuses. Do your best and work up slowly.

If you haven't been doing exercise ANYTHING counts. If you want to walk start with an amount of time instead of a distance. Like 20 min. That's how long it took me to do 3/4 mi when I started. But you know what I did it. Just remeber, you have to start somewhere. Today is just as good as any other day.

GOODLUCK,

v

oOh I like to do pushups off the wall while standing up. Works upper arms, abs, chest.

I can do this!!

Walk Away the Pounds exercise tape is great. The beginner tape is all I am doing currently and it works the heart and the muscles without pounding the joints. Just make sure you really stretch before and after to keep your back from hurting. Another thing is a rowing machine, I love mine, when I motivate myself to use it. It is a big investment like a treadmill but really works well without putting the stress on your joints because you work out just as if you were in a rowboat without the boat and water...lol.

My suggestion takes a litte money, but it's worth it. Try your local gyms or the y and see if any of them have a pool exercise class. It takes the weight off your back and joints, but still allows you to work your muscles.

I also like the eliptical machine. It's sort of like a stair climber without all the agony to your joints. I guess it's more like a stationary bike, but you're standing.

If you do join a gym or the y, then ask one of the trainers to set you up with something. Just make sure the person you work with has a degree and can really help you without hurting your back or joints.

I think your doing great just by wanted to do exercise! I still dislike it and don't WANT to do it..LOL But...my suggestion would be to find a yoga VHS or DVD that is designed for ppl who are not able to get onto the floor. It use's a chair. This will not only streach the muscles but it will strenghten them as well. It is slow movement as well and should be fairly easy on your body.

Yeah! Hooray for exerSIZE. I have some tapes that help. I just dug out my ancient Richard Simmons tapes to start over. I liked the many sizes and fitness levels of the class shown. I have a lot of arthritis and I can modify to suit. When I was jazzercising, i did a lot of the floor work standing or in a chair. U can actually do ab stuff standing at as high an intensity as on floor without back pain. I am going to reinflate my big ball, even just sitting on it during computer time, reading, or tv will work core muscles and help balance. As you strengthen your back you can add all kind of exercises. I noticed they are pretty cheap on amazon these days: you can find ball, pump, and book or dvd as a pkg deal. Anybody wanna be online exercise partners? I really need accountability partners. I would also share my videos with someone. I have a few I don't use anymore. Oh, if you can access a pool, any movement at all is great for you at first. Walking, stretching, leg lifts, etc are great. The Arthritis associan in your area may list classes if you call. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK OUTS!!!!
