What are the general opinions on scales?
My motto is don't get hooked on the numbers, but I just had to peek when I was at my mom's house today. The last I was weighed was August 20, at the doc's office. Today my mom's scale put me 17 pounds HEAVIER than the doc's.

I know this can't be right so I put it out of my thoughts, my jeans loosening up seem to say otherwise.

Do you all weigh on the same scale each time, have you gotten different readings on different scales?

I have seen 3 different doctors in a weeks time and with my scales they have all been within a 5 lb range of each other!

The scale is my friend. The scale is my enemy. The scale lies. The scale is evil. I love the scale.
All of the above are true at one time or another. It is truly a love hate relationship for me. I have learned that EVERY scale is get on has a different number so I only use my digital scale at home as a true measure. I don't move it and try to get on it in the same place.
I also have to use the scale at CURVES for my monthly weigh/measure. For purposes of this forum and web site the numbers I post are from my digital scale at home but the inches lost are from CURVES measuring.
This is a long answer but really reflects the contradictions I feel about the scale.

I weigh once per week and use the same scale each time. There is one at work (which I bought), but it tends to weigh 7 pounds more than mine. I'm going to the doctor's office to have my blood work done this morning (wish me luck on my numbers!) and his scale reads higher than mine.

I stick with one scale, once per week, and don't sweat the daily weight fluctuations if I am foolish enough to weigh daily.

I do not like the scale, it is not my friend,It lies and cheats, I wish it would steal , pounds that is. It makes me sad, angry and depressed. I think whoever invented it was related to the person who made the stirrups on the gyno table(silde your butt down please). So I just use my clothes for a gauge, and avoid confrontation.

Like everyone else (and especially this morning) I think scales are freakin' evil! But...keep in mind that all scales are evil in their own different ways. So pick your poison and stick with just the one; your progress will be more accurate. Seriously, if you don't have a higher quality scale, they fall out of calibration quickly.

For me, it's time I took my own advice and stay off of it every day.

Heck, just posted this in another topic, why not here? LOL
Call me the devil, Ishmael, or even just plain loco but...

I LOVE MY SCALE!!!! Don’t get me wrong, I sometimes don't like what it says LOL but I never let that bother me...to much.

That being said, my "devilish" counterpoint...

First, my only caveat is that the scale must have a body fat (BF%) measurement capability which means my chosen brand is TANITA.

Second, re-brain to think in long term trends and the only way to do that is to chart weight AND BF%. I use a spreadsheet to do this and will share it with anyone that wants to try it. It requires 2 weighings a day, first in the morning and just before bed. It averages them and produces a 7 day average graph. It also can be used to track ketosis levels but that is optional.

third, track food intake so that you can review food events and perhaps find something you should/shouldn't do.

forth, do NOT consider BF% measurements from these scales as absolutely correct but just as trend data. HOWEVER, even if you were to go to a place where they use water immersion, a single reading is not sufficient for absolute accuracy, a series should be done.

Does all of this sound like too much work? Depends on your situation. If you are steady and on course or have little problems in maintenance then maybe so. If you are trying to find out what is really going on, maybe it is essential.

I plan to put this all together on my web pages as they develop along so anyone can just link to it for consideration.

HANG IN THERE!!!

I have a love-hate relationship with my scale, it's one of those things that keeps drawing me back every few days just because I can't let go.

I would think the doc's scale is much more accurate than any home scale. The home scales can be messed up everytime they are moved.

Strain gauge scales, like TANITA scales, are VERY consistant! No moving parts. I can use my scale 5 times in a row and have the same weight each time or at least within .2 lbs of each other.

I'm doing better than I've ever done on a diet this time around, and I've done this many, many times. One of the big differences is that I don't have a scale anymore, and I give that much of the credit. When I want to weigh myself, I go see the doctor. So, I've only weighed myself twice since starting this diet last December. I'm down 51 pounds as of the last weigh-in. The next one should be in a couple of months.

The scale just feeds into my already obsessive nature. I'm glad its gone

I weight myself daily and input the value into DietPower. Diet power uses the data to track my progress, calculate my metabolic rate and recommended calories (I don't go by the calorie recommendation, though).

Sometimes, it's frustrating as the numbers from the scale don't always align with how "good" or "bad" I've been with my food objectives. Still, I like the early feedback when I've done something amiss. Seeing a 2 to 3 lb gain overnight after consuming too many carbs really helps me put on the brakes, fight the cravings, and has made me leary of repeating such cheats.
