I tell ya, the more I plug along the more I realize that it's the attitude that counts. I'm gaining a better sense of what makes me hungry, and the difference between true hunger and psychological hunger. Goddess, everything you are saying is absolutely true. I look forward to all the advice you give! And I certainly hope that I am still here in a year to cheer others on

Check inI went to dinner last night with a group of people - like 20 people - and it was for chinese food, not the best choice for induction. But I was determined to not cheat. I ate some chicken before I left just in case I couldn't do more than just some salad or something. I was, however, able to have a shrimp and veggie dish, and I asserted myself and requested that the "white sauce" be made without sugar or cornstarch. Lo and behold, I got a big platter of shrimp and veggies in a simple broth! And, since this is a local, family owned place, they brought out those little chinese doughnuts at the end of the meal - and they made one especially for me without sugar LOL. Of course, I didn't eat it, but it shows that restaurants WILL adapt.

Anyway, I did my first weigh-in this morning, and I've lost TEN POUNDS!!!!!!!! I refused to believe it, but then I did my measurements. 1" off my arms, 1" off my chest, 4 1/2" off my waist, 1 1/2 off my hips, and 1" off my thighs! I truly figured that with two cheats this week I would have been much lower than that, but hey, it happened! And of course, that motivates me more! And no, I'm not going to purposely binge because "hey, I lost it anyway!" I just wanted to share that with you. Thank you all for the support and motivation ideas. I've lost my first 10 pounds. I can certainly do ten pounds more

Great job on the loss!! Those inches are outstanding. I'm so happy that you took them. You are going to be so happy with yourself keeping that information. The diet center I go to has us measure in once a month and then they give you a ribbon strand that I keep up on my refrigerator. Last month they said I've lost over 70" in the 4 places they measure. They measure d wrong and recalculated me Saturday and I've actually lost 52" which is almost as tall as me! Still amazing! We do the same measurements as you except the arms. I'm hoping biceps go up eventually since I've been lifting weights. I need to tone up the loose skin in that area! Another thing that is good to keep is 1 pair of your biggest pants. I can almost fit in one side of my old jeans! After I'm done losing my weight (only 29 more to go - yea) they might even be roomie and I might make a long skirt out of each leg for fun.

Thanks babybluejay! Yes, I actually created an Excel spreadsheet to track my weight loss and to track my measurements. It calculates total weight lost each week. Yeah, I'm a computer geek When I did Atkins before I kept tally of my measurements and weight as well. I do think it helps with motivation to see where you started and how far you've come, especially if you hit a stall or you are tempted to eat something off plan. That is one motivational technique I DO know, and I got it straight from the book. I took my first walk this evening with my SO and our dogs. Motivation to exercise has been low because of the first week of feeling "blah" on Induction, plus the extra weight I carry causes my feet and legs to hurt, but I'm starting slow and will gradually work up. As Dr. Atkins says, it's non-negotiable!

that's great eddie! one of the advantages of having more to lose starting out is that you get to see those losses quicker as a rule, and man, is it a good motivator! i'd be willing to bet next time you're faced with the "cheating choice", thinking back to your 10-pound loss will help you stay focused on what's really important to you.

Kudos on the ten pounds, Eddie. You're doing fabulous and your attitude is 90% of the weight-loss process. Seems like you've got a great attitude.

My husband is also an IT guy (Oracle) and works from home. He just recently joined me in trying to lose weight following a modified low carb eating plan and is doing wonderfully well. If only he could get outta that chair in front of the computers and use the exercise bike and the treadmill, he'd do even better.

Keep on keepin' on. You're doing great.

I know this is an old post/thread, but I just had to say a kudos to goddess -- you totally hit it on the head and this makes so much sense and is simply stated.

    Thank you for this.

Hello, Im new here.. and after reading this I felt so much better. I dont feel down or anything, its just that tv, radio and even going out is so full of advertisements on food, thats NOT healthy. This is my 7th day low carbing i think ive lost around 7 lbs, i didnt weight the first day. and my scale is a little crazy i dont believe it. Although Im sure i was in the 260's. give or take and right now im at 245 also give or take. I need to buy a good scale anyways. Im just journaling what i eat and how many carbs i eat per day, how much i walk and things like that.
Im so glad i found this forum!!!!

    Lesly -

Your story takes me back to January of this year. One week in to low carbing, I get on the scale, hoping against hope, without a stitch of extra weight on me that I would reach the 200's (my weigh-in in the previous Tuesday had been 302). When I looked down at the scale, I saw 298 and was thrilled. Four pounds? That makes seven total in the year. "There's hope!"

Later in the morning, before taking a shower, I weighed myself again (I didn't quite believe it) I was in for a shock.

    The scale said 288.

I guess the extra ounce for my glasses was worth the recheck!

Hi, I'm going by the name of Sweet_p and I'm an older woman in my early 60's who needs to lose a very large amount of weight. I'm also on insulin and just wondering what hope I have of losing weight. I don't know where to post a thread and been trying to figure out for two days how to do posting. Could someone help me. I also would like to know if there is any other older ladies on the plan with a lot of weight to lose. Please help me.

    Thanks,

    Welcome, Sweet_p.

You might want to start a thread in the Newbie forum to introduce yourself. Just go to the forum (click here. )

At the top of the list of threads, on the left, you'll see a "new thread" button. Click that and it will give you a place to start your own thread.

Have you chosen the low carb program you're going to follow yet?

We also have a diabetic forum that you might want to check out. Since you're using insulin, make sure you work with your health care provider as you start this way of eating. You will probably need to adjust your insulin as you go.

Shelak, thanks so much for responding. It has taken me awhile to find my way around on this website as I don't know a lot about computers. I did read the two private messages that I found tonight and responded to them.

I have really enjoyed reading the threads and trying to get to know others going down this road as I am. I'm also thankful to those that have helped me get started. I have stayed on the LC way of eating for 19 days now and I'm feeling better all the time. I have started walking a half mile which doesn't sound like much but I could only walk a couple of blocks when I started. I have a little trouble keeping my blood sugars right so that I can get out and walk. If they are too low, I'm shaky and weak and if they are too high, I have no energy. So I'm learning lots of new things and trying to eat healthy.

I love hearing from you all . Thanks
