Greetings, NovasMom.

No, NovasMom, there's no evidence that a diet high in protein and fat ( along with very low carbohydrate intake ) results in plaque and fat deposition in arteries. In fact, the positive health results of a properly followed low carb nutritional approach are very well documented.

There are many books and countless research articles that explain the how's and why's of low carbohydrate nutritional plans. This is a forum for those who have already done at least SOME of the research, decided to adopt a low carb eating program and are looking for support, encouragement and tips. We're not here to try and persuade someone with very strong food preferences and aversions (please see my reply to your prior post) that low carbing is the right plan for them.

If, after research, you DO decide on a low carb eating program, please feel free to come here for support.

NovasMom - they have done studies on the typical diet of the Eskimo before Westernization was introduced. They lived on whale blubber and whale meat. No veggies, no fruits, no bread... just whale meat and whale fat! They lived a VERY long life, and heart disease was virtually UNKNOWN. Trans-fats and your body trying to cope with eating a lot of carbs (which it was never meant to do) are what cause high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and all (yes, some is hereditary, but so much of it can be controlled or even reversed with a LC diet).

My DH and I are addicted to hot wings and we have a HUGE bunch of them every week. I take frozen chicken wing parts and bake at 350 for about 40 minutes, then dump the wings in a bowl, cover with Louisiana hot sauce (drain the juice and stuff out of the baking pans), toss really well to coat, return to the baking pans and bake for another 15 minutes or so. We made the ones that Trina suggested one time and they were not hot enough for us We also make a mix of LC bbq sauce (Kraft) and Louisiana hot sauce and it's pretty good too!

It's pretty interesting, but lately I have been seeing health snippets on the Chicago news lately that low-fat lifestyles are being found to be VERY unhealthy for women. They don't go into details, but preliminary findings are suggesting this.

If you read any of the books that describe the proper way to eat a lowcarb way, you will find out how this works. The bottom line of ANY of the books is that sugar and processed starchy foods (i.e., virtually sugar laden foods as far as the body is concerned) are the main culprits in causing ALL of the common health problems that are plagueing people who eat a typical western diet.

You see.......sugars cause a spike in insulin levels. Insulin is the main hormone responsible for the use of blood glucose (blood sugar.) After years and years of abuse, the body becomes insulin resistent. This causes it to be unable to digest sugars properly, which leads to a whole host of health issues, with diabetes being at the top of the list. But along with that comes heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, intestinal problems, allergies, and of course weight gain.

Dr. Robert Atkins was a cardiologist. He prescribed a low-fat diet to his patients and found that they still weren't improving. After much research, he found that their conditions would improve after getting rid of the sugar from their diet.

Erroneously, fat has been demonized by medical practitioners, largely due to a study back in the late '70's or early '80's. They did not differentiate between good fats and bad fats. So with their numbers as a result of the study, they said ALL fats were bad. The fat they SHOULD have been studying is trans-fats or otherwise known as partially hydrogenated fats. (which are found in virtually ALL processed foods known to man) These are the fats that people were not meant to eat. Plant fats are completely safe to consume as are most animal fats.

Can you agree that the obesity rate has become alarming in the US? And you can't deny that obesity and diabetes has become the number one health issue in the US since the last 3 decades. There is a definite correlation between fast food (notorious trans fat users) use and process food use and obesity and diabetes incidence.

I managed to get to a healthy weight AND get my blood pressure under control using a lowcarb lifestyle. No one can convince me otherwise now, after 4 yrs of living this way. And I consume my fair share of fats.

It's unfortunate that the medical industry has latched onto the lowfat mantra. They are soooooooooo misled, so uninformed and sooooooooo wrong.

Ed posted this great NYTimes article in another thread. It explains very well how FAT isn't what's bad for you. It's the carbs... I mean psychologically, we've been taught since we were young, that eating fat meant getting fat. It seems to make sense.

But if you look at logically what human kind ate 1000's of years ago. There's a lot of animal fat and very little sugar. Here's a conversation I had with my surgeon right after I had my gall bladder removed:

"So doc, how is my diet going to need to change now"
"Not at all"
"You're kidding. You told me the gall bladder was used to store bile for when my body needs to digest super fatty meals."
"Yes, that's true. But at this point, the gall bladder is practically obsolete. We (Man) used to eat far more fatty foods than we do now. The liver can more than adequately produce the bile necessary for a modern diet."

At the time, I was happy and went back to my old woe for a while. Now two years later, I play back the conversation in my head and the light bulb shows up over my head...

Ahhhhh.....ya gotta LOVE Gary Taubes!!! I read his "Big Fat Lie" article when I first started this woe. It was wonderful. And I say to lowfatters.................How's that workin' for ya????? Thanks for bringing that back Sven!!!!!

Oh yea, and let's not forget all the high fructose corn syrup processed foods are laden with. They replace the fat in most foods with this incidious people killing food additive.

Here is a recipe the I tried this weekend @ a party. I may have this a little off~ but I'll try

3 chicken breast boiled ( diced in a mini chopper or shredded by hand)
1 bottle of Franks hot sauce ( or any hot sauce you like, and to taste.)
I like it HOT
1 cup of ranch dressing
1 cup of Mayo or sour cream
2 cups of chedder cheese( shredded)
~you could substite with what everkind you like~
1 block of cream cheese
Bake in oven, or mix and warm in crock pot.

I ate it by the spoonful, and on celery, or pork rinds! YUM.......
This tasted like wings.

Just my two cents on the mickey d's. I loved their cobb salad with grilled chicken for a year until they took it away :( But if you are in a rush and want to go then I'd eat the garden salad with grilled chicken and use your own dressing or the blasamic vinigrette they have. Of the salad dressings that's the lowest carb one. The ranch has 9 carbs. So generally what I would do was get the salad without dressing and use my ranch. But if you are on the good its hard to do that so I pick the vinigrette.

I love the frank's hot sauce. I make my own ckicken...I wouldn't call them wings becuasei can't stand bones in chicken. Not because of the bone but because of everything else that is attached to it.

I have been preparing my own chicked strips and they are very tasty! Even the kids love them! Start with some boneless chicken breast - cut into strips and season it. Dip the strips into an egg wash and then into crushed pork rinds (I use the food processor to get them chrushed - very fine) and bake them in the oven. Yum! And the best part is the only carb content is in the eggs!
