Okay guys, being that I'm 300 + lbs, I need a workout that won't stress my bones but will kill the fat. I was thinking of Curves, Lucille Roberts, or even taking a belly dancing excercise class! I want a gym so I can get out of the house more. What do you recommend? What has worked for you and why?

Although I am not currently exercising aside from walking, I know several gals here on the forum have recommended Curves.

In fact, I am going this week to my local Curves to possibly join. A co-worker has been going for several months and is really pleased with her results.

Our Curves is having a special during the month of October, since it is Breast Cancer awareness. They are waiving the membership fee and will only require the $29.95 per month. I'm under the impression that the membership fee can run anywhere from approx. $40 something to maybe $80 something.

In addition, I have rheumatoid arthritis and should I go into a flare, I only need a statement from my doctor to temporarly suspend my membership and montly charges. A great thing for me.

I think Curves would be a great starting place for you Write Girl. You can visit once without obligation.

    Hi Write Girl,

I have checked out Curves and it seems like a terrific place to "kill the fat". My problem, and the reason I haven't joined, is they have restricitve hours and my schedule doesn't mesh. Otherwise I'd be all over it like white on cauliflower (no rice allowed on Atkins). Get on their website and do a little research. One more thing, if you go to the actual place of business, don't fill out anything as they count that as your first visit. If they have any specials going on and you don't decide to join right then, you may mis out. That was my experience here in CA anyway.

Funny you should mention bellydancing as I've considered that a viable option as well. It seems like such a fun, sexy thing to do! Let me know if you go that route, your courage my be the catalyst that seals the deal for me, too.

Good luck and thanks for your support in my previous postings.

    Nice to meet you.

I am a member of our local Curves and I love it. I saw results right away and the machines are really easy to use. You will definetly feel and see results! Also, at our Curves, you can try it out for a week to see if it's the place for you. Check out your Curves and see if they might do the same.

    Hope this helps ya!

I'm also a member at Curves .. I love the circuit training - work everything all in one trip - even with my problem knee, the machines don't seem to bother it, and if its acting up, I just bypass the one that does, and seems to work for me. Ya don't feel funny bein there amoung all the women like (at least for me) when you do at a 'gym' - no one to impress - just go do your thing and leave. They are all individually owned, so each holds their own specials, but, most have some sort of special goin most of the time. They also don't have a limit on the 'term' (no contract terms) or cancellation if you don't like it, or isn't right for you.

    Good Luck

I found CURVES from posts on this site and decided to go check it out. Joined right then and there. Been going 3x per week (except when heart attack thing happened) since then. I LOVE IT!!
Very supportive, non threatening, womanily (sp) place. Ladies of all different shapes, sizes, and degrees of physical fitness. I have lost over 19 inches in 4 months. But I feel better than I have ever felt and the machines are terrific.
I NEVER stuck with an exercise program before CURVES.

Well that does it for me...I'm going to go check it out! I've never, in one blast, heard so many good testimonials about a gym (gyms are usually places to be scared of, LOL)

    Your welcome, Sus

I joined a ladies gym called Pace. It is like Curves, circuit training. I like it, it is not difficult to do, you go at your own pace, and it only takes 30 minutes.

I go to an All Women's Gym here in Austin, and I swim, currently doing 50 laps (65 is a mile)
and another 20 min of water aerobics I made up.
Water aerobics might also be something you want to check into. Low stress on joints, knees, etc. and in the water you don't feel as big as you are.... because of the bouncy(sp)
anyway, thats my two cents, not sure if there is a curves here in austin yet. Just saw a tv add about it tho, so maybe its coming.

You can check here http://www.curvesinternational.com/ for a location near you...that's how I found out there was one merely four blocks from me!

Thanks guys. I went to Curves and tried out the machines...it was just like when I swimmed in the pool and the beach as a child. Funny that it brought back memories! I enjoyed the simple, small environment too. I believe I'm sold

    Hey Sus!

Yes, I joined and have been going at it for two days! I'm ADDICTED. I couldn't believe there was a workout that put stress on the muscles, not the joints!

Laurie, the franchise owner, is the sweetest thing. She's skinny, but I don't feel like an inferior jerk during training. She seems well read on the subject of food addiction and appears to actually care about people. She monitors the workout closely (unlike at other gyms that leave you at the mercy of the machines!)

Well, I have to force myself to take a day off, LOL... thank you guys SOOO MUCH for recommending Curves.
