Default Stupid things people say when you've lost a lot of weight

I saw this in Low Carb Energy magazine and thought I'd post it here. It's so very true. When I first lost about 50 pounds in 1988 I heard a few of them myself. Lie: (I hardly recognized you (or) Are you sick?) You'll find this on page 56 of Low Carb Energy, issue #1 July 2004. It just come out this month.

    1)I didn't even recognize you!
2)Gee, you look so much better! What did you do?
    3)Have you changed your hairstyle?
    4)I liked you better before.
5)Oh my gosh-what happened to you?
    6)Think you'll keep it off?
7)Now you can have cake without everyone staring at you!
8)Will all that skin go away?
    9) I never knew you had cheekbones.
10)I didn't want to say anything before, but you were reallybig.

Some of that stuff is really cruel, but i havent been hearing any of that, to be honest most of the comments ive been getting are really positive, supportive ones, hmmmm. Or maybe ive learned to erase negativity, especially if its from someone who has no impact in my life at all.

Wink Re: Stupid things people say when you've lost a lot of weight

i don't mind when they say they don't recognize me so much...i do look way different now, and i consider that good.

i did have one friend who hadn't seen me since i'd started ask if i'd lost all the weight by choice, or if something else was up, but she's a counselor and so i figure that's a normal thing to wonder for her, since weight loss can be a sign of depression. she's very aware of stuff like that, since it's what she does.

my all time favorite stupid thing you hear: don't loose any more weight; you'll be too thin!

now, for the life of me, i can't understand how being smaller than a size 16 makes one "too thin..." but they say it anyway. i think what they really mean is "you'll be too thin for me to maintain the mental image i have of your and your role in the group, i.e. the 'fat one.' "

I had one guy ask me why I wanted to loose weight when he liked "big women". Like I care what he thinks, I'm happily married. Someone else told me if I loose anymore I'll look like a stick. Nice!!

I think the stupidest was from several of my relatives I saw recently for the first time in a year (and 65 pounds)... They said nothing! Ok, they are a part of the naturally thin and can't gain an ounce to save thier lives side of the family, but still, with a change that huge you'd think one of them would have been at least remotely curious/supportive. Oh well, that's I guess why I see them once a year!

I read that too and thought that it was great!

I once heard someone say.......There is something diff....erent about you???hmmmmm
(btw: I had lost 50 pounds) I said...I lost some weight! And then he exclaimed" You lost ALOT!" WOW!!!

I did see someone once that I hadn't seen in a while and he seen me last while I was just starting Atkins. When I see him again,...in a crowded room he yelled! HEY SKINNY!!!!! obviously I didn't even think that he was talking to me! And then he used my name and called me over and ranted and raved about my weightloss..... His wife has gone from a 22 to a 4 in a year and a half! When he told me that I knew that I could do it then! (that was the first time that I lost this weight...this is the last BTW=)

    Cute Thread!

    Two of my favorites:

    1) When my best friend's mom had not seen me for 3 months: "HOLY S***, how much weight have you lost????!!" That made me smile

    2) My best friend relayed this story to me: A co-worker had lost a significant amount of weight (size 20 --> size 6-8) by portion control and exercise. She looks great. They met up with another friend who hadn't seen her for over a year. The friend exclaimed, "Oh my God! Did you have gastric bypass??"

Tara, I love the first comment. Wouldn't mind getting that one myself. LMAO.

The second one, I'm not sure if I'd taken that one as an insult or a compliment. Probably half and half. (or what a friend used to call "backhanded compliment)

The one that gets me the most is.... "I bet your husband sure likes you better now!"

    Lisa

Yeah, this person has a reputation for 'verbal diarrhea', a serious condition in which words run outta her mouth faster than her brain can grasp their meaning or consequences. It probably would have offended me if she had said it to me, just due to the hard work we are doing to lose weight and be healthy. Not that surgery is a walk in the park.

Tara, ahh yes, I know that condition well. I've seen it in a few people. LMAO.

Mick, I think I'd choke the person who said that to me. LMAO. My late husband was reallly bad about the "you need to loose weight" bit, but yet offered only put downs. What he was really saying is (you need to loose weight so you can look like all of those "cookie cutter" types of women I see in Playboy or Penthouse magazine.) Well, he just wasn't going to get it from me!! lol. At least now I don't have to hear the put downs.
