One thing very cool about doing the cleanup work on the old content is that I'm reviewing everything on the site...lots of great reminders and very encouraging to read all that stuff again.

I ran across an article from Andrea in this process that I think it's especially encouraging and thought our refocus folks might enjoy it because that's what it's about:

New Beginnings with a Little Help from Your Low Carb Friends | LCE

And for extra encouragment, don't forget to follow it up with her success story update that shows the outcome of her refocusing, linked at the bottom of the article, too -

Goddess, that was great to re-read.... I have read a bit lately (People mag with those that lost huge) etc. and one of the main things people were saying was to keep coming back, don't give up, ... almost like AA, eventually it will work, if you work it....and another thing I noticed lately was that if I didn't eat as much (portion control) I felt full and the weight just came off....so... after a couple of hard food days...am back still holding my own.... and focused a little bit more....

carolyn, i honestly do believe that the ONLY way to fail this quest is to quit. that's it!

even those times when my choices aren't cutting it or when the scale isn't moving, i KNOW i feel better than i ever did eating the old way, i KNOW i'm healthier and happier and more energetic, and i KNOW i can maintain that.

kudos on your own progress, ms. c.

Amen!

Sometimes it gets frustrating, you really do work hard to stay focused, but don't see progress, wondering what to do next - but then, when you look back at what you were before, how your health is so much better, how much happier you are because you're feeling better, how you can get out of bed without groaning nearly so much (notice, I didn't say without groaning at all, I think once you're past a certain age, groaning is just a part of our daily function!), how you look at other people's shopping carts in the grocery store and wonder how in the world they can eat that stuff, feeling quite smug in your determination to stick with your woe, and you realize that you're doing ok, regardless of what you perceive as lack of progress, because life in general is much, much better, due to sticking with your plan to the best of your ability.

I decided to start back to using Fitday. It's a real pain to keep track of all your food, and having to enter custom foods that aren't listed, but I guess that's what I'm going to have to do. It just makes doing low carb seem like an obsession; however, if I look at it as just another tool, then I'll get past the annoyance of having to do it.

It was suggested by another dear member here that perhaps I'm not eating enough. Who am I to argue with logic like that? It's quite possible that I'm not. My carbs are usually below 20, but my calories stay between 1500 and 2000, seldom above 2000. So, perhaps my young friend is right, maybe I need to eat more. Hmmm, perhaps I need to revise my menu for today!

I did the Fitday thing yesterday, didn't do too bad with it. I put my figures in my journal, kept the carbs quite low, increased my calories a bit. Perhaps this is what I need.

I got away from the tracking. I just got tired of trying to figure out all my homemade stuff, and since I don't make soup or chili or a casserole the same way each time, it was getting to be a real pain. All I can do on those is to guesstimate the nutrients. Right now I'm feeling lazy about it, so unless I'm eating just plain meat & veggies, I'm not going to bother tracking.

So there! LOL!

working on pulling back to 20 carbs again... feel like I have lost my way these last two weeks, but am once again filled with exuberance.... bought lots of correct food yesterday, and brought that with me to work so I have something to munch on... cheese, ham, hard salami....

going to try to start adding more exercise... something to do at night.. maybe jump rope, maybe raking the yard (it needs it badly) something to get my metabolism up a little more....

life is good....

Question Re: Focus and Re-Focus Group

Hello All!

I am having a little challenge--I mean I am working on it but it is difficult.

My husband and I live alone-no kids. He is VERY supportive of me but due to his health and eating restrictions placed on him, his diet is the EXACT opposite of mine.

He needs to eat practically no fat, acidic free, semi vegetarian, low salt and high carb and fiber diet. So I always cook for him and then for myself.

Still, he hates his food so often, even though he should not, he eats mine or indulges in cakes and cookies and chips.

I do not mind him eating my food--I mean who can blame him right? but the cookies and cakes are a temptation.

I have been good over the past four days of induction but it is sometimes very hard...particularly since I have a sweet tooth already!

Right now, when I crave sweets, I mix water with the liquid coffee creamer that is low in carbs or with hald and half, add equal and coffee, whip then boil and drink it; sort of like a homemade cap.

My second problem is my parents house. They are definately NOT supporters of ANA and they always invite us to dinner or to eat out.
Eating out is actually easier--I can always order steak and veggies!

EAting at home with them is tough.

I try to avoid dinner invitations to their home or to bring a dish that I made but it is not easy.

How do I keep temptation out of my life?

SheShe

You have some temptations to deal with, here is how I deal with some of them...
My dh is a heart patient....and very skinny and can eat anything and not really gain weight...
We eat the same foods....I buy Low fat meat.... ground sirloin, or round, ground turkey, turkey bacon, turkey sausage, lots of chicken, lean pork (loin chops) ... with that said, I hardly use butter... might put a little on veggies, but not a whole lot....He doesn't like rice, pasta, so not having those is no problem... he also isn't a big bread eater, so I get a loaf of lc bread, keep in fridge and it is there if he wants a sandwich....
Sweets, yes mine likes those also, and I will buy him some little debbies to take to work on the weekends, and we keep them in a closet that isn't opened all the time.... he also has been asked not to munch away on them in front of me.... I don't like having to watch him eat them when I can't....
I do keep sf jello, sf pudding, sf fudge pops, and sf popscicles,in the house for me so I have something I can munch on....

when going to parents.... bring a nice salad to add to dinner, just say that you know how you parents cook, and to keep yourself on track for your food habits, it works better if you can bring at least a salad for you to eat.....

if going out, most restaurants will accommadate almost all diets.... just let them know you don't want the potatoes, or rice or pasta and just want a nice house salad or some steamed veggies....

Hope this helps... you can do it, you will succeed....

Sweets! Ah, my downfall! Actually, you can learn to make some really good low carb desserts. Just be mindful that sometimes even these sweets can trigger cravings.

I love George Stella's NY style cheesecake. And there are just tons & tons of recipes on this site for all kinds of goodies. You can have a bit, and so can your dh.

I had to eat out early this week, as I was out of town. I found it very easy to find appropriate food, and when I got home, I had lost a pound, which is not usual for me. I usually gain water weight from long drives and having to sit all day in meetings. But eating with family, when they aren't lc friendly, can be a daunting task.

Perhaps prepare a casserole, don't even say low carb, just take it to share, and be prepared for compliments for your fabulous dish. Again, there are a lot posted here that would fill the need quite nicely.

I sure wish you success. We're here for you if you need any more help.
