| Lately, I've heard this phrase several times from several folks returning to low carb. It seems this is what started the intial LC derailment. "Just a little bit won't hurt." And it doesn't, maybe...right that minute. But a little bit turn into a little more which turns into a little more which turns into all the dang time! And don't you think I"m preaching! I do this exactly, so I totally get it. LC has been incredibly good to me, after all. I'd be a fool to give it up. Are you kidding? I lost over a HUNDRED pounds, was never hungry, took myself straight out of the risk category for diabetes, improved my health and energy all over the place, and now have my very own low carb site, for gosh sakes. No matter how strict (or lax) my focus, I always consider myself a low-carber. Period. But I have put weight, using this very phrase. Carb creep is a sneakly little #($*#$%!!! A bite here or there becomes a serving here or there which, too ofen, becomes a daily thing. The cravings can start, a little at a time, then a little more. And if you ain't careful, you can wake up one day and be asking yourself, "What the heck just happened here?!? These pants used to be loose." I"m not saying this is everyone's experience. Maybe it's not yours. If not, cool. But I say, "Beware!" 'Cause when I hear this phrase coming out of my mouth, whether or not I've choosen to listen that time, I still know the truth: "Just a little bit ain't worth it." ![]() |

| There is a whole lot of thruth there. Some times it is just that one bite that can derail you....kind of like a smoker who has quit and then thinks, well just one cigarette won't hurt, (so ex smoker here, quit cold turkey twice to do just this analogy) And bam with a 2x4 if that one cigarette (or one bite) didn't just end a lot of hard work. |

| Even just a little bit of a low carb treat can turn into a binge, and those carbs can add up to the equivalent of a nice high carb goody. I learned that the hard way. |

| I completely understand. My problem starts with a nibble or a small "treat" then the attitude of well I have blown it today, so may as well EAT UP for dinner. Then, heck, it's only Wednesday, I can't start back on the program on a Thursday....so Then I add 4 more days to the FREAK OUT! I have food addictions and major issues. This I KNOW! Monica |

| Monica-You know, if I had a dollar for everybody I've heard say that, I'd be answering your post from my vacation home in Hawaii! I wouldn't call them "major issues," myself--more like common issues! But things to be worked out nonetheless because they get in your way. The whole all or nothing attitude is one of the big reasons why diets fail, IMO. It's when it's no longer a diet (to be followed perfectly or declared a failure, only coming in entire day varieties and only startable on Mondays or Jan. 1st), then you can make start to make the switch to "just the way you eat." There is NO blown; you can't fail until you quit trying, and your behind does NOT know what you had for breakfast at dinnertime or what day of the week it is. ![]() I also give myself liscense to poke fun at these things because I was one of the worst offenders. You can move through it, though: just remind yourself of how totally nonsensical it is when you hear one of these thoughts in your head. Peace out. |

| OH I agree! I didn't say I made any logical sense! But, best I try I am working on these issues. I have also sat at a restaurant glancing at what others (THINNER PEOPLE) are eating and I wonder, do they fret constantly about what they eat? How do they cope? I need to put aside ALL OTHERS and do what I know is best for me. Don't feel like I am missing out or cheated. Life is what it is. Some have killer metabolisms and others LIKE ME ... DON'T! LOL Monica Thanks Goddess |

| I think that the late great Dr. Atkins coined it as "One bit or bite is the kiss of death on this program!" ![]() Thanks for the post Godess.....

| Oh man!!! Can I get a "H&LL YEAH!!!" ![]() All those "just a little" or "just this once" times with no-no foods is why all my previous hard work became unraveled and I've spent the last 3 years trying to get back into a serious mindset about controlled carb eating. I had lost 40lbs and was well on my way to looking smokin' hot, not to mention radically improved health, and just by being sloppy and adopting this mentality got me fat and miserable ... again. ![]() CONSTANT VIGILANCE!!!! Wasn't that from Harry Potter 4???

| kelly, you are too funny! i think that "thinner" people do think about what they eat. i sat at a party on saturday with some of those folks and they asked what was in certain foods and watched what they were eating. i think that we just don't hear and they just don't share their inner dialogue.

| All too often a little bit becomes a large bit... it is a problem with most of us that we can't portion control.... knowing exactly how much a portion is has been one of my problems .... so eating a little bit only makes me wanting to have more little bits, then the bag is gone.... shouldn't have gotten that bag of (insert your favorite food here) and I wouldn't have eaten that little bit..... Like Kelly, I have been guilty of little bits, little bit become large bits, and then I am done for....There are foods i can't keep in my house because of the little bits becoming all of it.... c
