Default Thank You... once again

I have been visting this site off and on for about 4 years now. I initially lost about 50 lbs on Atkins and the support and recipes I found here helped tremendously. I have continued to check back here and there for support and more recipes, etc. But, I have never kept in regular contact. I quit smoking about 2 years ago and since then I have gained about 15-20 lbs that I just can't seem to get rid of. I am pretty active - hiking, running and walking and even that has not been able to do it. So, I am going to start Induction again on Monday and see if that helps. I am sure that my carb intake is higher than it should be so it's going to be a good reality check, I'm sure. I am also going to try to keep a food diary to try and find out where the extras are coming from. I just wanted to say thanks for being here - it's nice to have a place to go to get refocused and get great suggestions/advice.

Terrilynn,
Welcome home!
Good to see you here again.
I totally agree with you...this is a really great place for support and motivation; the folks here can't be beat, IMO

The old Carb Creep has snagged many of us, that's for sure, but it sounds like you know what to do to get rid of those pounds.

Wishing you a great re-start on your LC journey!

so far, so good. It's been a little tough sticking to induction and I leave this week for a buisiness trip, which makes it even more of a challenge for me to find good things to eat on the road that are easy to grab for. I have discovered that I have leaned on Almonds and all kinds of nuts as a snack - thus one of the reasons I may not be losing. I have cut them out for induction. I bought pork rinds and stocked up on cripbreads as well for the crunch. What are other good ideas to keep in my bag when away from home?

Thanks!

Terri, what kind of crisp bread are you getting? I have not seen any with a low enough carb count that I would want to use. For a crunchy snack when I travel, I usually rely on pork rinds, unless I have brought some of my crackers with me. I have also found that planning for trips enables me to better stay on plan. For example, I will usually take some breakfast One Minute Muffins with me. If my room will have a refrigerator, or if I take a small cooler, I can take muffins for my entire trip and plan on buying some cream cheese or eating them plain. If I will not have a refrigeration capability, then I will only take muffins for 2-3 days. I am addicted to nuts, so I try to limit my nuts by buying only the small packages. However, I do try to avoid them if I can, because they have a tendency to stall me. Other things that I take for travel include pepperoni sticks and beef jerky, if I can find some with low sugar. However, in most cases, I find that just by eating regular low carb meals, I am not usually hungry between meals. Evenings/weekends in a hotel room are a dangerous times because I find it too easy to mindlessly eat whatever is handy. To counteract that, I try to have access to a flavored splenda sweetened diet soda which seems to help. Diet Rite and Hansen's are both good.

Are the crispbreads the bran crisps, like GGG Scandinavian Bran Crisps? They are all fiber, and are a good choice for snacks. Pork rinds are good, too, but I can tired of them really quickly.

Cheese sticks can also be a good snack, and if you have a cooler to keep them in, will keep for a good long time, as will a few hard boiled eggs.

Eating good lc meals will help keep you from having to snack, too.

Hope you find out what works for you.

Nita, I was not familiar with GG Scandinavian crisp breads. I looked them up on line and see they claim 3 grams of carb and 0 net carbs. I looked at the ingredients listed. 85% unprocessed bran, .4 % salt and the rest rye flour. With those ingredients, I am at a loss to figure out how they arrive at their claimed figures. Unprocessed wheat bran is only about 2/3's fiber per the USDA (64.51 grams of carb with 42.8 grams of fiber per 100 grams of bran and rye flour has somewhere between 46 and 64 net grams of carb per 100 grams of flour (depending on whether the flour is light, medium or dark). With those ingredients and without more information, I would seriously doubt the claimed carb count for the cracker.

the Scandinavian Cripbreads are the ones I was referring to. I eat them all the time with either egg or tuna salad on them or sliced turkey and cheese.... are they not good after all?

I think they're fine. Like Henry, I think the carb count is a little hinkey. However, Dr. Bernstein thinks they're ok and counts them as 3 gms. For myself, to be safe, I count them as 2 gms each. That seems to correlate with their negligible effect on my BGL's.

Maggie, I think you are probably right-on counting them as 2 net carbs. I have done some additional research and looked at other crispbreads with the same ingredients, though with slightly different percentage of bran (65% v 85%). Those list 6 carbs with 2 grams of fiber. However, those crackers are also 12.5% smaller than the GG crispbread. Interpolating the differences in the percentages and adjusting for the larger serving size of the GG crispbread, I get approximately 5 grams of carb with 3 grams of fiber per cracker. As a result, I believe that these crackers are not 0 net carbs and I would probably count 2.5 net carbs per cracker. Not too bad, but definitely not 0.
