Personal test: yelling helps! Be your own personal drill Sargent

Posted 01-16-2008 at 05:44 PM by babybluejay1

Grandma has been really good lately at spoiling the kids with junk food. It's one of the ways she shows her love so I won't deny her of it BUT the boys eat until they are full which means....LEFT OVERS!! So I was about to take a bite when out of no where I screamed at myself, in my head of course so no scaring of children, of "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HEATHER? MAKE A DECISION! DO YOU WANT TO BE SKINNY OR DO YOU WANT TO EAT THIS JUNK????" That was two days ago and I can't believe how many times I've yelled at myself since. Whatever works!

I wonder if Grandma could be gently guided to bring healthier snacks for the kids at least part of the time? I mean, I know it's out of love, but it's no good for them pumping them full of junk, either. Not helping either of you. I know that might be challenging to approach, though...

Good going Heather! My grandmother wouldn't allow candy in her house except for licorice all sorts which she believed to be medicinal. LOL and even then 2 small pieces were all she would allow.

By the way, your Head-yelling technique sounds handy. I know I can pick up leftovers and they head straight for my mouth without my brain even turning on if I'm not careful. A "Hey! Whaddya think you're doing, Dixie?!" might not be a bad idea.

Oh, I've had the talk about treats in the house but I've lost since she said she is the Grandma and she wants to spoil the kids. Most times if there is to much I send things with my DH to his work.

Rob - I am going to be just like your Grandma one day!! They'll have stories about how I'm the Grandma who lifts weights, lol.

Dixie - The meaner I find I am to myself the more I don't want the junk. Hope it works well for you too!

oh, well, i'm not gonna be mean to myself. i don't respond well to that. it makes me obstinate and cranky. that's how it works when other folks are mean to me, anywho.

I'm the grandma who doesn't give sweets, except for the occasional mint or box of raisins, to my grandkids. Kids can be spoiled nicely with other things - especially hugs & kisses.

I, too, yell at myself, (when I'm alone, sometimes out loud!). It's an effective tool, so keep it up, Heather.
