rattle rattle boom!

Posted 07-24-2008 at 09:53 PM by Goddess

I realized a couple of days ago, almost EVERY time I cook something, the mess of pot and pans I have shoved into the cabinet come crashing out on the floor.

This is like, 98% of the time.

So what would you expect from this?

a.) Do you think that would convince me to ogranize something? Stack pans? Get some kind of plastic organizational aids?

Or b.) do you think I'd probably just laugh at myself, grab what I want, and shove the rest back in there, to come crashing out on my foot next time I cook?

If you guessed B, you have guessed correctly.

Old habits are hard to break! Believe me, I know firsthand!

It's a huge job to organize cabinets. I have stuff way in the back that I've forgotten I own.

It really helped to hang the pots. If you have a place in your kitchen for a pot rack, it's worth it. Frees up a lot of cupboard space for other stuff. I've even been known to use a sturdy cardboard box for little stuff, like lids & small pans. And if you haven't used it in a long time, get rid of it!

Still, I'm organizationally challenged. I think it's hereditary, because my DD1 is the same.

good advice as usual, nita! i've been feeling the need for a mass purge coming on, but have put off getting started...it always feels so good to get rid of old stuff. and since we're in a fairly small home at the moment, this does help.

Less is more, sometimes. Maybe you could store the less-frequently-used pots and pans somewhere less accessible, and just keep the ones that get heavy duty use there, so the mountain will be more manageable.

i think i need to go through the WHOLE house and do this kind of thing you ladies suggest, to be honest. i live in a small place and the clutter-bug can really kick my behind if i let it go too long. i feel a purge coming on!

Dixie, you'll feel so much better getting rid of stuff. We moved tons of stuff out of the house when we had the floors replaced, and a lot of it did not come back. Some got sold at a yard sale, some found new homes with the kids, and a lot of it is now sitting in the landfill. And now my house isn't nearly as cluttered, and the feeling of calm is just beyond words.

i know you're right nita. my husband put together a new computer for me. and in preparing to change, i'm ditching lots of files and programs i no longer use. and if THAT feels really good, on such a small scale (and it does), then i know it's a good time to purge in general.

i just have to take it a bit at a time so it's not so overwhelming.

Four years ago we decided to update our kitchen. But instead of a major remodel, we got new countertops, cabinet doors and drawer fronts. So I had to empty out all my cabinets. I found things I moved here 8 years ago and never used so to Amvets they went. In the process I reorganized to avoid that crash boom from all the pots and pans. You just have to do it ...start with one cabinet at a time.
