Other People's Misconceptions About LCE

Posted 02-10-2009 at 06:13 AM by katlupe

I hadn't been to my church since I started my LCE. So nobody had seen me until Sunday. Everybody commented on how good I look. Losing 22 pounds does show to people you haven't seen in months! Course it's fun to get dressed up NOW!! Used to hate trying to squeeze into something....and then I'd end up wearing something that I could hide in. Now I still need to lose more, but this is the thinnest I have been in years.

Everyone knows that I have to sit down for the praise and worship. I just could not stand very long. I had been using my cane for a long time now due to my knee problems (both knees). Sunday, I stood for the whole praise and worship and everyone noticed that and commented to me later on it. The only reason I even took my cane inside was because the parking lot was all icy. The last time I went to church was in the fall and I remembered sitting there feeling so sick that I was crying silently to myself. I thought I was dying of something. I prayed and prayed that Sunday for a healing. You know, it wasn't long after that when I came across my copy of Dr. Atkins' book......which was not my book at all. I was given it to sell online. Instead I read it cover to cover in one night. It changed my life!

After the church service was over people were having pizza. I said no thanks that I brought my own food. That is when I heard the bad news about Dr. Atkins. Someone said "well it's fine for now, but don't stay on it. You are losing your muscle mass and that's not good." I said, "Have you read Dr. Atkins' book?" "No, I don't want to get into that." Don't want to get into what? Now this woman does not need to lose weight. But still she made a comment about something she knew nothing about. Yet, she was one of the first people to comment on how good I looked! That is what people do.

Yesterday I received a low carb cookbook that has good recipes in it. But the introduction turned me off........the author, Sue Spitler had a registered dietition, Linda Yoakam write it. First off she said that all the people following the famous low carb diets are doing so incorrectly. She said you needed a minimum 160 carbs a day to keep your brain and nervous system functioning. She also said the nobody knows the effects of a low carbohydrate diet yet (written in 1999). I can use the recipes but I will not read the other information in the book.

I have always known my own body. I do not use allopathic physicans for this very reason. They do not know me and they prescribe medications that cause other things to go wrong with you. So for the most part, I take charge of my own health. I use many herbal remedies that I grow or pick wild around my home. The same with people writing books or on websites. I read it. I study it. I test it on myself. I am not a follower by any means. Even when I found this awesome website.......I had already comitted to this way of eating. I can only see good things happening to me through this way of eating and living.

Just had to get this off my mind today.

People will always have misconceptions about low carb. They've been brainwashed to think that it's going to kill us. I keep my carb count very low, and I've never been healthier! I think all the hundreds of people who have come through this site, and other similar sites, will attest to that!

I think, though, that we might be the same way if someone lost a lot of weight doing a low fat, low calorie diet. We'd worry about their health, wouldn't we? Because we know that so much of the food that they eat could be causing damage, wreaking havoc with their blood sugar and insulin, causing them to have what some call internal obesity - they're thin on the outside, but have too much internal fat, and they also lose muscle mass. So, I wouldn't judge the woman too harshly, because she probably believes just as firmly that our way of eating is harmful.

Isn't it a shame that food can cause such problems?

You said a mouthful there! I belong to a NY Homesteading group and one of the points of conflict is between the vegetarians and the meat eaters. Of course, these are people raising their own animals for eating. And the vegetarians are people who are not eating meat due to the animals being killed for food. I stay away from those conversations. I love animals and could never raise them for food. But I also understand the people who do. They know their meat is totally organic and hardly costs them anything.

I love the lady at the church who said that about the Atkins plan..........and I won't let it become a problem between us. I plan on being a living example of how healthy and wholesome low carb eating is........just like you more experienced Low Carbers are!

i think that, long term, many of the naysayers change their tune. faced with the evidence of someone doing well, at a certain point there is just not much left to argue over.

and i wouldn't touch the vegitarian/meateater debate with somebody else's 20 foot pole!
