Bad Year For My Garden

Posted 07-22-2009 at 11:36 AM by katlupe

Been pretty busy this summer so far. My garden is not doing as well as it should be. Our area has a late tomato blight that is affecting tomato and potato plants in our area. Hasn't affected mine yet. But since we have not been getting a lot of sun the tomato and pepper plants have not done well at all. Even my green bean plants which by this time every year have been feeding us daily have not even had one bean on them!!!! I am not happy about this at all. I figure it is to be expected as you cannot have a great crop every year. So I will have to buy produce at the farmer's markets to put up for the winter this year.

My salad greens and herbs though are producing very well and we are eating salads nightly. I always add fresh herbs and wild plants to our salads for variety and they make it taste awesome. I have a huge lemon balm plant and have started making tea out of it and then cooling it for ice tea. Not quite lemonade but close.

The key for me in following my low carb plan is to have my foods available and plentiful. If I get hungry I can always grab something that is low carb and good. I always carry foods with me that I can eat too so I don't get into a situation I can't handle. I did get off my plan this summer and it made me feel terrible. Not from guilt but from a healthy standpoint. My low carb plan is not just about losing weight but about feeling good and healthy.

sorry to hear your garden is having a rough time this year, Kat. i have very little experience gardening, but am trying tomato plants this year. (i'm not currently blessed with a place for a "real" garden, but have a couple potted plants.) i'm excited and looking forward to the day when i can follow more in your footsteps in this regard.

Dear Kat, I'm praying for your tomatoes! I haven't had the heart to plant any this year because my daddy just passed away and we always grew tomatoes together. Aren't they just about the best food on earth? When I do have em I have to run to pick any before my little boy and giant poodle eat em all while playing out side. They stop off every few min for a little snack. Love all your comments, you are inspiring. Keep feeling good, healthy and beautiful!!!!!

I am so sorry about your Daddy! My own Daddy (and yes, even at my age I still call him Daddy) and I share the love of gardening too. He is the one who taught me how to can. In a few weeks, he is teaching me how to make his and my Mom's "secret pickle" recipe. He turned 90 this year and thinks the recipe needs to be passed on. I think I will always garden in his memory after he is gone. Wonderful memories are what we are left with till we are reunited again.

Dear Katl, Thanks for a great blog! God Bless your Daddy and Mama too! Family recipes are treasures and family is the very best. I am so glad you still have him with you and your wonderful memories are still building and building. Cherish every moment. I don't plan to stop gardening, all of us were miserable without our garden this year, and I think not having one made us feel a lot worse. Already makin' plans for next year. We just got kind of slammed because he died right at planting time. He was only 67, and his diabetes and weight definitely robbed us of many wonderful years together. Almost his last words to me were "Darling, you've got to lose weight" and by golly, I am!!
Can't wait to find out how the pickle recipe turns out!!! Get all of those things you can and journal the stories and thoughts that go with them. I find that things i was sure i KNEW are hazy because I can't just call my daddy up and clarify... God Bless you and your Family!!
