Harvesting Some Vegetables & Berries

Posted 08-17-2009 at 05:11 PM by katlupe

To be honest, I wasn't as bummed out about my tomatoes getting the Northeast blight as I normally would have been. I think maybe it is a good thing. The reason being one of my favorite things to eat in the summer is tomato sandwiches made with real soft white bread and mayonnaise. Not exactly a low carb meal!

Every year I usually can about 60 quarts of tomatoes and that is what I normally make my sauces for pasta from. But lately even my husband does not seem to care for pasta meals. I offer to make them for him but he says they make him feel bloated. I just found a recipe in my Stella Style cookbook for a meat lasagna that does not call for pasta and want to get around to trying that soon. Just haven't done it yet. So as far as the tomatoes go, we won't miss them this year.

I have been picking blackberries too. In the morning I pick about a half a bowl worth and eat them for breakfast. They are very big and very good! One of the advantages of living in the forest I guess.

Today I dug about 40 pounds of potatoes and that will be for my husband's home fries in the mornings. My garden is FINALLY giving me cucumbers! I am very happy about them as they are a low carbers delight! But no cucumber sandwiches.......

I hope nobody here supports PETA! On facebook today they had a link to an article concerning them trying to make you think you are fat if you eat meat! I had to hold myself back from replying to that! I did though as I do not like to get into those fights online with people who do not know what they are talking about. But the article REALLY gets my anger up......as we all know that meat did not make us gain our weight in the first place! Here is the link: Why is PETA Making Fun of Fat Women? : TreeHugger

All the vegetarians I know are either overweight or underweight and look weak. I will never believe that high carb foods are healthy. Never!

Thanks for sharing the article! I’m an animal lover (dogs, cats, horses, etc.), but I’m not a fan of PETA because of their over-the-top tactics. I especially like the part in the article where they say that Vegetarians look and feel better than meat eaters, whatever! I only have two vegetarian friends, one is overweight, sluggish, and always too tired to hang out, the other is in good shape and healthy. There are many extremes of vegetarianism, and to each his or her own, but PETA needs to check themselves, seriously. I’m definitely going online to order their vegetarian starter kit (NOT!!)
