| | Actually, Mab, I HATE exercising. I've never been good at sports, was always the slowest runner in gym class (and got teased about it). And I've had my Gazelle for a couple of years, but just didn't get on it for many, many months. It's just that I knew I had to do something. Start out small. A short walk, part of a walking tape, maybe lifting small weights. Then add to that, bit by bit. Don't try to push hard at first, or you'll burn out and stop. They say that it takes 3 weeks to form a habit. So perhaps you need to make it your goal do to some form of exercise, even a small amount, every day, for 3 weeks. By then you'll have made it part of your daily life, and perhaps you'll find it easier to stick with it. However, do not do intensive exercise every day - your body needs some rest time, too! |

| | Mab, I am right there with you! I hate to exercise and will do just about anything to avoid it. I've noticed that I often find ways to "busy up" my time so that at the end of each day I find am suddenly out of time to do it. I make up so many excuses not to exercise that I actually waste time doing things that are worthless just to avoid it. The dilemma? I need it! We all know that the best way to boost the metabolism and start feeling great is to exercise. So, I've recently taken up my own advice that I give to my patients - start slowly.... Rather than starting day 1 by joining the gym or promising yourself that you will walk 2 miles a day etc., just start a little at a time. Make an initial committment to doing 10 minutes of exercise once a day. Go to Walmart or whatever chain you prefer and get the Leslie Sansone Walk at home exercise video, 10 minute solutions dance video or a Richard Simmons Video. Tell yourself that you will do one of these videos for 10 minutes each day and no more!!! Do not push yourself to do 20 minutes; just do 10. Do this for a week and then go up to 15 minutes. Add 5 minutes each week and aim for 1/2 an hour/day. You can split this up into segments of 10/10/10 (morning/lunch/evening), 15/15 or just do the whole 30 min. once a day. Your choice. Studies have shown that 10 minutes of exercise 3 times a day is just as effective as doing 30 minutes once a day - so why not break it up? I've recently started to do this and it feels far less overwhelming than saying "That's it, I'm going to walk 2 miles a day!" We've all got 10 minutes so why not let that be your start and see where it takes you. I have found having a few different videos keeps things interesting. Sometimes I do the aerobic exercise every other day and on the other day I do crunches and resistence band exercises. I think the big point here is to incorporate exercise into your life slowly, try to sneak it into your day in a way that will be fun and unobtrusive so that you don't feel burdened by the time you have to put into it. Let you body gradually adjust to the change and make it apart of your lifestyle instead of just a means to lose more weight faster. Try it and let me know how it works for you - I'll be right there too! |

| | one thing i've learned: i get overwhelmed with "i'm gonna do this or that x times per week" - ahg! instead, i take one day at a time, and if i go in fits and spurts, well, those spurts were good for me, and whenever i do anything exercisey, i know i've "done something good for myself". also - those 10 minute videos are good ("10-minute solution carb burner" especially - has 5 great 10-minute workouts - and you tell yourself "i can do 10 minutes"...then you find you can probably do "just another 10 minutes...and so on...) also - helps to have a friend to exercise with! |
