I've never blogged before. Never had a lot to say before. (Yeah, right!)

I think I'll use this for my stray thoughts about low-carbing, and save my journal for just day to day keeping track of my eating, etc.

So, here are some thoughts on dieting:

It's a shame that the word "diet" is equated to losing weight. It really means your daily way of eating. We can technically use the term to describe our way of eating, much as we talk about the Inuits' diet or the Masai diet, or even a cow's diet, or just the way they eat each day. When did it turn out that it was a short term way of eating to lose some weight and then to go back to our old habits? I know it's been hard for a lot of people to get over that thinking. When I finally realized that I have to eat this way for the rest of my life, or end up back up at my highest weight (or higher) and also end up a lot less healthy, then it became so much easier to accept this way of eating for what it truly is, my daily diet. Yes, this woe is for losing weight, but it's still my daily diet, and I'm not afraid to use that word! I'm not dieting, I'm not "on a diet", but I do have a daily diet of low carb foods that have slowly been improving my health, as well as allowing me to very slowly lose weight.

It really bugs me, too, when people ask me if I'm still "on that diet", as if I'm going to stop eating healthy foods. I have several friends who are diabetic, who would benefit from "that diet", but who eat whatever they want, and rely on their insulin pills or shots to keep their blood sugar under control. I even have one friend who claims that Splenda spikes her blood sugar, but will eat sweets when we have a dinner together with other friends. But no one believes that low carb is healthy, so I don't try to convert anyone to my way of thinking. They just don't want to listen.

I think people can only listen when they're ready to hear. When I first heard about low carb, I couldn't even fathom not eating half a loaf of bread a day...but eventually, I was ready.
