Paying Attention

Posted 03-24-2008 at 12:33 PM by QueenMama

The last couple of weeks I've been eating out of control. It's never carby stuff, it's not in the house, and when we eat out, I do not, repeat, do not, order anything off plan, ever. When they bring croutons on the salad, I pick them all off. The ubiquitous bread is put aside.

But lately I've just had no control over my eating. And I've baked some low carb things that were gone sooner than they should have been, right down my gullet.

Where one should be adequate, I've eaten 2 or 3 or 4, of low carb foods, but when added up, they become a high carb accumulation. And it's shown up on the scales, big time. Enough to scare me into paying a lot more attention to what I've been eating.

So far the jeans still button and zip, so I'm not doing too bad in that regard.

What has been the biggest problematic foods? Sweets are at the top (my sweet tooth has never gone away, I was born with it, and I'll die with it.) Then cheese, which is odd, because usually I can take or leave cheese, but lately I've been taking it, lots of it! And cream cheese, which is an ok food, but not in the amounts I've been consuming.

Perhaps I need to start decreasing my artificial sweeteners, a little at a time. I use Sweetzfree or FiberFit, so they are 0 carbs, but still, they could be affecting my appetite, causing me to crave more sweets.

I guess the first step is realization that there is a problem, and then analyzing the problem, and figuring out a possible solution. For me, it will be paying attention to what I put in my mouth, to everything I put in my mouth. I HAVE to get a handle on this, before it spirals out of control.

aww, i'm sorry to hear this, nita. i know i sometimes get annoyed that, at certain times, just a little more or a little less makes a difference.

cream cheese is one of those borderline food culprits for me...regular cheese, i don't tend to overdo, but cream cheese, yes! and i know for some people, even the sweet taste is enough to trigger at times.

good luck figuring it out. we'll be here for you, cheering you on!

Oh Nita, I feel your pain. It is too bad that one good thing can lead to too much of a good thing. Those cravings, and I know the sweet tooth cravings all too well will get us if we aren't careful.

It is good you are able to notice it and now you can start addressing it. You can do it!!!

I had a thought for you, Nita...I pulled out my Atkins book, because I started suspecting I had some yeast issues, and a number of the things I read not only resonated with me (which they did), but also reminded me of several things you've said...I"m not sure about all of them, but several of these things I know I've seen you mention...

Difficulty losing despite staying on plan, very sensitive to retaining water, sweet cravings, low energy, low-grade depression, sinus issues, gastrointestial issues, exposure to an older building (for allergens and mold), sensitivty to cheese and other foods with fermenting, etc., etc.

If you haven't looked at that in a while, you might want to review it as well. I know that I had lots of the symptoms without being aware of it and wondered if that couldn't have been an issue for me.

Anyway, it made me think of you, so I thought I'd mention it. Dr. A. even mentioned that lots of supplmenets contain yeast, which I would never have thought of. Maybe this is old news to you, but if it's not, it's something to consider.

Wow, you know, it could be. I just subscribed to Dr. Briffa's newsletter and downloaded his free book, Natural Solutions to Common Ailments, (it's 240 pages in a PDF file) and he says that an itchy scalp can be an indication of yeast.

I buy most of my supplements from Puritan's Pride, and they are good to not put a lot of junk in them, but you never know.

I guess I need to start doing some research. If I remember right, you can't get rid of yeast w/o a doctor's help, and most doctors don't believe that it's a problem.

    Thanks for the info.

well, the supps came to mind after seeing the page listing of all the stuff you take elsewhere! i get vitamins from puritians pride, too.

since i've been eating organic greek yogurt in smoothies (9 carbs per cup) for the last week or so and noticed my tongue was much nicer in the morning...that clicked the "yeast question" in my brain. ding.

the suggestions in DANDR seemed mostly stuff you could do at home as well, and mentioned various medications that may contribute, as well as diet stuff and environmental factors.

I have yogurt, just forget to get it out & eat it! I should put some in my breakfast shake every day. I also take acidophilus every day. It just seems to keep my digestion on an even keel.

My brother-in-law (he's 23 years older than me) went to the doctor a few years ago, the doctor prescribed Nexium for him. He asked why, the doctor said because all people his age suffer from indigestion problems. He told the doctor that, no, he doesn't have digestion problems, and didn't need the Nexium! Doctors just assume that because you are a certain age that you are bound to suffer from whatever ails others at that same age. The only given, as far as aging goes, is presbyopia and wrinkles!

Anyway, I'll go back and read my copy of DANDR, see what options I have. Thanks for the info, Dixie.
