| Welcome, fellow couch fauxtatoes, to the "Couch Fauxtato August Activity Challenge." Not usually into challenges? Don't want to tie yourself to a particular weight or size result? Intimidated by more traditional Exercise Forums? Do you, perhaps, have a treadmill that has clothes hanging on it? ... hmmm? But are you, perhaps, willing to contemplate a modest expenditure of activity with a short term commitment? Then this is the place for you! You decide what your challenge is, since you know yourself best. It could be taking the stairs at work, so many times per week, or if you're in the right climate, going for a walk at lunch time. No challenge is too small or too odd! You define your own challenge and then we'll check in every so often and compare notes. Let's try a little determination during these "dogged days" of summer! ......... ok, so go ahead and groan! Define your own challenge! Try it for a month. *****LISTEN, FELLOW SLUGS AND SLOTHS, THIS IS IMPORTANT. A TRUE COUCH FAUXTATO CANNOT JUST LAUNCH HIM OR HERSELF OFF THE COUCH AND INTO AN INTENSIVE EXERCISE PROGRAM! Now, I realize that, for most of us, there's little chance of that. We are often also great procrastinators and most of us will take our sweet time dusting off tapes and/or looking for long burried exercise equipment, and will be adjusting our activity to whatever feels ok, especially to begin with. However, GET CLEARED, MEDICALLY, FOR WHATEVER CHALLENGE YOU ARE PLANNING FOR YOURSELF! Then proceed in a rational manner. Work into it slowly!*****

| I'll play again! I did not meet my challenge for July, but I did better than I have done so far! *grin* I think I will aim for more of the same. I will think about what type of exercises I will realistically do, and post tomorrow. Some type of "required" activity for reading and more for the time spent on the 'puter. Thanks for keeping this going, Maggie! |

| This month, my challenge to myself is to try to really integrate this mini-session stuff into my life - every day, home or work. I want this to become a HABIT! Seems only fair that I try to develop at least ONE good habit to balance off all my bad ones!

| Hey, Cyn! We've both "signed up" early! Seems like we should get some credit for that, alone!

| I'm in Maggie! My goal this month is to keep with the walking even when I go back to work in two weeks! Even though today is actually still July...I will let you all know that I walked my 4.5 miles today.....and guess what? I did it with ankle weights on. I can't believe I was able to do it. I couldn't have done that a month ago. Good luck to all this month! I know we all can meet out activity goals!!!

| Welcome back, Seesko! So, did I ever metion how, whenever I reply to one of your posts, I'm tempted to sign it "Pancho"? See, I know you're way too young to remember, but when I was little (being old as dirt as I am) the Cisco Kid was a hot show on the tv. (yes, we called it "the" tv in almost every context. I think my parents got "the tv" about the same time they got me. LOL!) My cousin Nicky, who lived downstairs, wanted to be the Cisco Kid when he grew up. Since I couldn't be the Cisco kid, he allowed me to pose as his side-kick - when his little brother Billy wasn't around, anyway. When we saw each other each day, it would be: "Hey, Cisco." ... "Hey, Pancho." ... said in the coolest way possible, of course. They were our idols ... well, at least until Superman came around.

| Oh Maggie, I haven't thought about those TV shows in a long time, boy does THAT bring back memories!!!!! I think I will qualify for being "old as dirt" too come August 16th!!!! (I still don't believe I'm going to be 50!!!!!!!!) I managed to remember to go to Curves this AM. They have a new "kick your butt machine" there. Oh it hurts soooooooo good!!!!!! (did I already post about this today??? or before??? I think I'm having an early senior moment!!!) Plus, I'm up wayyyyyy past my bedtime.

| I'm in. Curves 3x week (this last week was the first time in months I haven't made it!) had that stupid garage sale through Saturday morning, and since DH and DS really weren't much help - I was on my own with no time. Water aerobix 2x week.

| A new month already, ugh. Maggie and Cynthia - Your extra credit has been duly recorded! Cynthia - You'll do it this month! You too Maggie! Maggie - I used to love the Cisco kid. Guess I'm a member of the "Old as Dirt" Club too. Barb - It's okay to repeat yourself! Good going on the curves! It's okay to repeat yourself! Mary Kay - Doing Good. You're very consistent. Glad that yard sale is just a bad memory. Remember you did the work the money is yours. Treat yourself! As for me - I'll repeat myself, as well, I did 120 miles in July and increased my speed to boot. Can't promise August will be as good but I'll aim for a minimum of 100 miles. 120 was hard, No room for skipping a day, really. Am leaving for my walk in about half an hour but it is so humid out I dread it. But it's cooler at this time of day, only 74 but humidity is 91%. :( . Better go before I talk myself out of it.

| LOL @ Rob! But seriously, you're an inspiration to me because (in the end) you talk yourself INTO it much more than you talk yourself OUT of it. That's where I'd like to get to at some point. Barb, you DID mention that machine right before I switched to the new month. It sounds like it might be effective. Gravity and weight loss definitely takes its toll on our old as dirt butts, of course. Throw in a couple of bad knees and most of the excercises for the "ole buttisimo" become off limits. This machine sounds "knee friendly" from what you describe. Let us know how it works for you. Mary Kay, I feel for you. I've never had a sale of my own, but I have helped out once or twice when my elderly neighbor wanted to have yard sale. I mean ... speaking of butts, here ... that was a royal pain in mine! Like Rob, you're an inspiration to me for the same reasons. I'm still MUCH better at being inconsistent than anything else. LOL! Here's to another month of trying to get it (or keep it) going!

Yeah, Maggie, that machine seems to be "knee friendly." In their description of how to work it they make sure you keep the knee bent on the leg that you're standing on. I will give updates on it. OH and I hula'd the whole time during the recovery stations again. (Still gotta go buy one!!!! grrrrrrrr)

| Maggie - It's a matter of making it a habit. Gets easier if you do it every day. Still no Hula hoop Barb? Before I go for a long nap I'd just like to report in that I walked 7.5 miles this morning. I figured at some point in the month I was going to get obsessive and do something like this. So I figured Why not get it out of the way. I took an excedrin migraine tablet before I started and now that it's wearing off - ouch!

| Rob - our OCD walker! the numbers just continue to amaze me. Barb - Our curves has 2 of those kickback machines. We used to do one leg the first time around, then the other the second. Now she has two of them, and you have to do both legs twice -and the darn things are next to each other. That and the leg lift (with the overhead one between). Hardest stretch of machines in the place. We got the oblique machine in a few weeks ago. That one is pretty hard to use. But will get used to it like the rest of them. Shes also talking about getting a second overhead press (many of us do it backwards one time, and frontward the other time - so she figures 2 of those and we will be working the same muscles twice (we do the circuit 2 times - have all the machines +1 now. I'm really seeing the difference in my body since starting the water aerobics. It seems to be very relaxing, although we end up doing 300 crunches, and lots of other stuff for an hour. Never felt I could exercise for an HOUR!!! and the ladies in the class get together for dinner once a month, and have a summer picnic. I'm past being concerned about how I look in a suit. Lots of plusses for finally getting around to starting this.

| WOW MK, you guys must have a LOT of machines there in order for her to double up on them. Rob, are you going to get any of that Tropical Storm Alex that's threatening NC???? YIKES, isn't the Hurricane season starting early this year. I thought it didn't start until September. LOL, still no hula hoop of my own. I'm spending so much time concentrating on the stuff for the party, it gets pushed to the back of my mind. Hope you feel better soon!!!!! and have a nice nap!!!!

| Ok, today I did a bunch of hand weight thingies while I was reading, along with some leg exercises. I discovered that there is a Curves, between here and work. Not sure how I feel about that on a number of levels. I've never done any sort of gym thing, but you guys seem to get something out of it. What does one wear to this sort of affair? Must I pour myself into spandex like the exercise ladies on TV? (I WILL NOT look like them. )If I got started soon, I could make it my August challenge. But that seems so organized. We'll see how long I can procrastinate even looking into it.
