Smile "Bat Wings" Challenge

Okay, so we women, as we get older, develop "bat wings", you know, those flappy, flabby tricep areas between our elbows and armpits. Well, I was just watching FitTV this morning and they have a program where these two guys go into someone's home and snoop through all their stuff to find things they can use as exercise equipment. They found a 15 lb dumbell at this lady's house that she was using as a doorstop. LOL So, they had her use it to do some work in that area. Here's what they had her do. She laid her back on an ottoman (or you can use your bed) with her head ALMOST hanging over the edge of the ottoman. (The neck MUST be supported) Then she took the dumbell in both hands and extended it over her head and down a little, bending the elbows and keeping them parallel to each other and a bit tucked. They said to NOT let the elbows spread outward. (If you spread your elbows out, it does NOTHING for the triceps.) She went back as far as she could with it. Then she brought it back up, with arms straight up over the body, then back down. The movement is SLOW with this. He had her do 3 sets of 15 reps. If you are kinda whimpy, you could start out with 3 sets of 5 or 10 reps, but try to do more.

I did this..............hoooooooboy!!!!! What a workout. It only took like 5 mins.
I can really FEEL it!!!!! I'm sooooo tired of these batwings and it's time to do something about them. They are useless for flying, so why not get rid of them.

Recap of how to do this: (Form is important)

Lie on your back either on a bed or ottoman.

Hold the dumbell(s) (I used both of my 5 lbers for a total of 10 lbs. and these, BTW, are available at Walmart or sports supply stores. Feel free to use heavier ones if you think you can handle it) in BOTH hands.

Start by holding them on your chest and then raising them straight up.

Bend your elbows so your arms go "behind" your head. Keep the elbows straight, tucked, but not touching.

Bring your arms back straight up, slowly, as if you are trying to touch the ceiling with them.

Do this 15 times, rest a minute, then do another set of 15, rest a minute and then do the last set of 15.

SO, I figured I'd see if anyone wanted to join me. If I post this as a challenge, it will keep me accountable. I hope to do this 3-4 times per week with one day of rest in between.

Just check in here whenever you did it and post that you did.

Anyone want to join me??????

I could fly to England with my bat wings. My weights are really light...but then, I get winded hanging my clothes in the closet. So I'm in for a wimpy version of the challenge.

barb, i love these. the exercise is usually called "french press."
if you do em w/ a straight weighted bar (usually at the gym), they're called "skull crushers" - yikes!
i have been doing em for a couple years ... and ooh boy, do they work!!
i'll join the challenge, as i do them once a week during my tricep workout.

Ju,
Does your husband have a heavy (5-10 lb) hand tool of some sort? Or how about a 2 lb can of veggies in each hand? Any bricks or stones lying around you can weigh? LOL...use your imagination...anything you can comfortably hold and is not cumberson or bulky...
Good luck...

Ju, you could use a big plastic jug of clothes detergent if you have one, or a bottle with some kind of secure top, filled with water and sealed tightly. You could weigh it to make it close to ten pounds maybe? You want one with some sort of handle on it I would think.

So from the Atkins site, it looks like we are doing a type of Skull Crusher. I've done the Kickback ones too. They really kick your triceps.

Glad to have you here Ju!!!!

STEBIMAW!!

I'm trying not to add anything else to my routine.....but I'll check in here and see how you wing-haters are doing! LOL!
(Ya'll should see my sister's....she had a gastric bypass and she could jump from her second floor apartment and land safely!) Just kidding! Mine aren't too bad. I'm hoping my new homegym is going to help me with that!

Have fun and PLEASE don't hit yourselves in the head....they don't call them "Skull Crushers" for no reason, eh?
