Ok, lets talk turkey!

How are some of the ways you're going to succeed this Thanksgiving without giving in to all of the TEMPTATIONS?

Me, I am thinking of just staying home!!!!!

Seriously... my mom is coming in from Alaska for Thanksgiving thru to the New Year, so its just me and her really, we do have "family" near but none I claim (think Jerry Springer!).

My best friend has invited me and my mom over to her house for Thanksgiving but her home is small and cramped, her mother will be there and her husband, son and the husband's mom and dad ~ so I'm not sure I want to go, I don't want to hurt her feelings or to cause my mom to not have a good Thanksgiving but... it doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me and if staying away from it all means more success for me, well... that's the biggest temptation of all for me at the moment! :-)

My mom and I could cook at my house but having the mashed potato, cranberry sauce, gravy and rolls, which I know she'd love to have so near me, oh no, that's serious trouble.

Are any of you planning on having some of the Thanksgiving traditional fair or are you, like me, shooting for cold turkey only?

Sorry Ohdear. Someone else told me that theirs said expired to. If I figure it out I'll repost them.I'm actually thinking about going meats and vegies only. It will be hard but I think that the next day I'll feel a lot better about it then if I ate everything my hearts desire. I really would like to maintain during the Holiday. It is going to be hard but it seems like family watches me now to see how I'll eat. I won't let MYSELF down.

It is going to be tough, I am already thinking about pumpkin pie and whipped cream or a pumpkin and cream cheese log!!!

What do you all think... is it possible to eat really clean for the week before and the days before and after Thanksgiving and have one peice of pie and regular size portions of 'the good stuff' and still lose that week?

OhDear -
there are some wonderful low-carb pumpkin pie recipes out there. and real whipped cream with splenda is so allowed.
last year,I made George Stella's Low Carb Praline Pumpkin Pie - it was very, very good.
this is the link to it.

Oh, Thanksgiving! We're hosting it this year since DH's Aunt died this summer and we usually have it over there.
I am letting everyone bring what they want to bring, but I will be sure to have green beans and mashed cauliflower to eat with my turkey. I'm leaning toward fruit salad with Cool Whip for my dessert. I know Cool Whip has hydrogenated fats and corn syrup in it. But it is non-dairy, like me......and I haven't touched the stuff in 2 years. THAT will be my indulgence. Besides, it's 2 carbs for 2 tablespoons. The green beans, turkey, ham, and cauli have very few carbs, so most of mine will come with the fruit salad.

It stinks being dairy-and sugar-free....especially on Thanksgiving. The key is....IF you are going to have an indulgence for the holiday, do just that. One thing on this one day. Then make sure everyone takes the forbidden leftovers home. Keep the turkey and veggies....and get right back on plan.

More later.....Desperate Housewives starts in 5 minutes!

Thanks MaryKay! I've bookmarked it!

I'm still "new" to all of this, even though I've been doing Atkins for almost 5 months now, I've been mostly in the iduction phase (that is when I've not cheated... I've had 5 or 6 cheat days, hmmmmm, that's one a month) well, anyway, here's the question:

Will having something like the low carb pumpkin pie recipe have an adverse reaction for me since I am mostly in induction, will it be more or less like "cheating"?

Also, a link or the actual recipe for the mashed cauliflower, would be great! Is it any good? What does it really taste like? I've never eaten cauliflower, is it weird in anyway?

Hey, OhDear. Your progress photo is amazing. Keep it up!

You can find several recipes for "fauxtaoes" here on the forum. Click on "COOK" at the top of this page, scroll down to Community Recipes, then to Vegetable and Side Dishes, then to Starch Substitutes.

There are alot of great recipes there. We also had a thread going about something and we all began commenting about "fauxtatoes"....how we make them and our different varieties. I'll see if I can hunt it up for you.

This reminds me: I forgot cauli when I went to the store yesterday!

Default Hanging in during the Holidays Thanksgiving Challenge

Just got news that I'll be at PIL this year for Thanksgiving. Looks like I'll just let them know I'll be having turkey and salad that day. Good thing I'm not to one for pies or other sweets. It is all that starches that overwhelm me! How is everyone doing today? The rice-a-flower recipes sounds like something to look into.

I know its been a week since this challenge started but can I join too??

I am currently weighing 141 lbs. My goal is to loose 5 lbs till Thanksgiving (136 lbs) and to loose 14 lbs (127lbs) till Christmas. Sounds like a lot esp. when there is not much time left to Thanksgiving, but I would like to give it a try

I'm late joining too! I'll try for 3 lbs - my starting is 215, I think.

There was a great pumpkin pie recipe here last year - in cooking discussions. We make it all thru the year - tastes just like real, but with no crust. As for the cauliflowe - I think its a close 2nd to mashed potatoes, but not exactly like it. You do get the same texture if you really blend them. I like to add ranch dip and cheese to mine. Very tastey!

Hey, Ambition and Angie! This isn't the first challenge we've been in together! Welcome! The only real difference in this and the other challenges is that I may actually make my goal this time!

I was down another pound this morning to 222, my lowest weight of this year. But, I think TOM is sneaking up on me. And that usually means at least a couple of pounds. I still have time to make my goal, I think.

Heather, your little "Smilies Thanksgiving" is too cute!

My stats: 225/222/221-----------can you believe it?
