Since I started the No Pop Til Ya Drop challenge, I have been researching Splenda, and I have read some very alarming things.Originally Posted by QueenMama
Nutrasweet has been around a long time and the pink packets even longer-- we've had lots of time to gather a lot of research and learn how really foul those chemicals are and how harmful to our health they are-- then comes along Splenda-- touted as 'MADE WITH REAL SUGAR' so everyone thinks this is the 'safe' one.
Well new research has shown that Splenda is no better than other ones, causing weight gain (that's me!) increases in MS, Lupus, diabetes, sexual dysfunction (anyone else have a problem with decreased libido??)
And Splenda may have sugar in there somewhere (and how is that a good thing???) but it also has chlorine. Yikes!
Here's a web site that you might find interesting (and I hope I'm allowed to post links on here.. if not, I apologize ahead of time)

In any regard, I think that Splenda and aspartame and any other chemically artifical sweetner are POISON and we are so very lucky to be on this challenge-- cleansing our bodies!

Hey Doves thanks!
I haven't had problems with splenda, it seems to be better for me. But, anything fake like that that you are putting in your body isn't going to be a good thing. Like I said in the ver beginning of this thread my male friend is a trainer and a strong man (many) competition winner and when I need advice, I ask him. He doesn't candy coat (no pun intended there...lol)anything for me, yet is very encouraging that I am doing this thread and this woe. (well not this woe he isn't sold yet on the low carb thing....however, I am not sure that he truely understands it either? Another time about that though) He said all diet pop is terrible for you and added that the fake sugars are "diet" killers. Which was hard to believe but, understandable at the same time. If that make ANYsense at all..... Almost like the diet industry is keeping us fat while feeding us the diet title in the drink. Just a thought.
Thanks again on the site and thoughts!!!!!!:jumpgreen

Well, if we can drink diet soda and LOSE weight-- there wouldn't be much need to drink diet soda any further. So I think you're right-- there's something to that. Sounds rather 'conspiracy theory' to me, though, and I hate to come across that way.
I don't know about anyone else but it was HARD to kick the soda habit. It's been about 2 weeks for me now and I literally thought about soda night and day for the first week-- I wanted it bad!
I think it's addicting (like any other chemical) and I don't think it's 'fooling' our bodies into thinking it's harmless. I think it makes us crave more and more. I was up to almost a 2 liter a day-- I would have rather drank nothing than to not have my beloved diet pepsi.
I can't believe how much money i've spent on soda, either. Maybe $200-300 a year? Holy cows
Now it's water and a sqeeze of lemon for me and that's it.![]()

dovey,
I agree stopping and going without is really really tough, I can guarantee you are NOT alone!!!!!
I would rather spend that money on something else that wouldn't make me fat lol!
shoes, handbag, makeup, perfume, cute clothes........the list is endless....
I agree about the conspiracy theory though, I read a book on all KINDS of stuff like that and have thought twice about what I am putting into my body since then!

I'm still not convinced that Splenda is a problem. I am convinced that some people will be sensitive to any artificial sweetener. A friend of mine can't use Sweet N Low or other saccharin. They actually thought she had a brain tumor, but it was just headaches from the Sweet N Low. As long as we are moderate in our use, there shouldn't be a problem. And, it's been proven that there isn't chlorine in Splenda. That is just a wives' tale to scare people. And the list of ills supposedly from Splenda sounds exactly like the ills listed from aspartame. So, you either believe the hype and not use any artificial sweetener, or use what works best for you. I'm sticking with liquid Splenda, in moderation.
My boss offered me a soda this afternoon, and I turned her down! Yeah!

Jam yesterday, jam tomorrow, but never jam today!
It is well documented what Splenda is made of. It's made from a natural occuring sugar found in a bean plant and three chlorine molecules. The more molecules the sweeter the product. It's made in a lab just like asparatame.Originally Posted by QueenMama

It's interesting that the website you mention was launched by the sugar cane and sugar beet farmers, who stand to lose a lot when people switch to artificial sweeteners. These are the same people who lobbied to get cyclamates off the market in the 60s and 70s. Canada never took them off the market, and so far there have been no reports of major health problems with cyclamates. Dr. Atkins decried the idiocy of taking a perfectly good sweetener off the market.
Of course, on the other side of the coin is the site put out by McNeil Laboratories showing that there have been extensive studies on Splenda, and how safe it is.

So, you have 2 sides to the story, both sides with an agenda, and something to lose if the other side makes headway. This is the way it's always been, and always will be. Each person has to decide if the product is worth the risk, or if they would rather not use it. Again, moderation is the key if you choose to use an artificial sweetener, even something natural, like stevia.
I guess the best thing is to stick with water. Who can argue with its health benefits?
And the argument that Splenda contains chlorine - well, salt is sodium chloride, and they make chlorine from salt. Salt can cause major health problems (high blood pressure, water retention), can even cause your car to rust out (ask anyone who lives on the coast, or who lives where they salt the roads in winter). But most of us have a shaker of salt on the table, anyway.
Didn't mean to get on a rant. There are just so many things that could be either good or bad for a person, and it's so difficult to slog through all the arguments and find out the reality of it all. Sigh.

Thanks for the invite Heather. I might do that. I've never been good a adding up my miles I just know the time. 45 or 90 minutes. Depending on how I feel. I got in some walking today by putting down fertlizer on my lawn. I'm gonna have to cut it soon so that counts too.
