Default Atkins Original 1972 Revolution

I found my original Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution, the 1972 version, and have been reading on it. This is the way I lost weight the first time in the early 80s, and it was much easier. It is a simpler way of eating.

Essentially, you start your first week at Level One, or eating no carbs except salad, 2 cups per day. The allowed proteins are pretty much the same as the Induction foods in DANDR. The salad is greens, cucumbers, radishes and celery. No limit on the protein or fats (back then little was known about the dangers of transfats, but we know now how dangerous they are, so absolutely none of those.) Four ounces of hard cheese. Eggs of any kind. No limit. 4 tsps of cream a day. And he suggested you limit caffeine if you suffer from hypoglycemia.

After a week, you should have gone into ketosis, and should have lost a few pounds. Then you can add 5 to 8 gms of carbs, your choice, every day for a week. If you are still losing, add another increment each week, until you stop losing. Then you cut back your carbs a bit until you are continuing to lose, and that is the amount you should be able to eat.

The big difference is that you start with 0 carbs and very gradually work your way up. So your body is immediately starting to burn its fat reserves.

This worked so well for me, it was so simple and easy to follow, that I am going to return to it. I have been stalled for much too long, after cutting out sodas, powdered Splenda, increasing my vegetables, decreasing my vegetables, drinking way more water than I ever did before, exercising 3-5 days a week, and still not losing, just hovering in a 5 lb range, for not days, not weeks, but months.

If anyone wishes to join me, I would be happy to have the company. If not, well, I've done it on my own in the past, and can do it again.

Here I am Nita I am doing the 1972 version as well. Also, in 1972 there was no allowance for fiber...carbs were carbs...period. So the overall intake was still less throughout the plan.

If anyone is interested in getting a copy of the 1972 book it's available through amazon. Just do a search for "Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution" (no "New" in the title.) I got mine for a penny and paid 5.95 shipping. It's a hardcover book and it's in very good condition. It has a red canvas cover.

I followed a low carb plan in 1977 and had great success. At the time, I had no idea about Dr. Atkins. It was just a plan my high school friend followed and he lost a bunch of weight, so I did it and lost weight, too.

Anywho....I just ordered my book (thanks for the Amazon tip, Vickie), and will following the Atkins original plan when it arrives. Count me in.

Ladies, do you want to post your food choices? I just finished a 2-egg salad with mayo, mustard and a tsp of sf pickle relish and some Babybel cheese for breakfast.

I told my husband that if what we are having isn't enough, to tell me, and I'll make sure he gets some extra veggies, and of course he has his nuts he munches on every night. He has no problem with it. He has lost a little more weight, since we cut out most treats. He has no belly anymore. I'm glad, because both his parents had Type II diabetes, and his mom died from complications of it at the age of 63. I want him to be much healthier. So far he's never had abnormal readings on his blood sugar, so I don't expect him to have problems, ever.

Posting food choices sounds good to me.

So, are we going to make this a "challenge"? If so, do we want to start a new thread in the Challenge Forum? Somthing, say, like...."Back to Basics - Following the Atkins 1972 Version" -- or whatever.

Or, do you just want me to shut up and leave things as they are? LOL.

Posting food choices sounds good to me as well. As for making this a challenge...I'm open to whatever...makes not one bit of difference to me where we post...I'm just glad to have buddies to do this with

For breakfast I plan to have 3 scrambled eggs. I have them cooked but I won't eat them until I get to work. I always get to work a little early so that I can eat AFTER my walk.

I don't care where it is, as long as we are where others can find us if they wish to join us. Either place will do. I'm not in a decision making mood today!

Ok...so if Nita doesn't want to make the decision...then I say let's go ahead and move this to a challenge thread. April...can you move this one and rename it or do we need to start a new one?

Default Back to Basics - Following the 1972 Atkins Plan

I think that worked, ladies. I created this new thread, merged the old thread into this one, and the old one, as a result of that action, automatically deleted.

Cool, eh?

And if neither one of you likes the title of this thread, I can change it. Please let me know.

Ok...so far today I have had 3 scrambled eggs and a lean ground beef patty. I'm doing a 3-5 day meat/egg fast to complete my induction. I'm on day 2 and feeling fine. Oh...and I've also had 100oz of water and 2 cups of coffe, black with fiberfit.

My lunch was a small salad with cucumbers, jicama and no carb french dressing with a little mayo, and about 1/2 of a burger, and 1 1/2 oz swiss cheese, Earl Grey tea w/cream & FiberFit. About 70 oz water so far.
