well I finally figured out how to increase my speed when i go for higher mileage. Eat carbs. aack! I hear you. But it really helped today when I had low carb apple-blueberry pancakes with LC jam for breakfast 2 hours before walking. I did 5 miles in 80 minutes which for a 5'9 250 pound guy with 29 inch legs is very good. I feel energized. 16 minute miles are pretty da**ed good with a dog in hand. Your turn to brag. Remember this challenge is about challenging yourself not each other. so if you walked 2 miles and weren't able to 2 months ago that's fantastic. Rob

Rob, your observation is similar to what cue-bald-one reported in the exercise forum on the old board - additional carbs help performance when exercisingly heavily. If I recall correctly, he keeps copious notes on his carbs and long-distance bicyling. He might have some new notes on this in the exercise forum. I skipped a walk yesterday, so I need to double up today. Plus, we ate dinner with friends last night. She's Mexican, a great cook, and justifiably pround of it. But, the meal was pretty high carb: adobado pork, refried beans and a dish of homemade fried tortilla chips drenched in a tomatillo sauce! Ai Yi Yi! A good walk today might help shoo away the extra 2 pounds I woke up with this morning! ~~~Teelbee 174 (Mar. 2002, highest weight), 164 (Jan. 2003, begin LC) 164/135/137-134 remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic

| Hi Rob, Just wanted to post that I walked every day last week on my lunch hour. Walked for an hour on Sunday. I finally checked out the fitness club near me, and decided not to join. The equipment looked old, and there were too many people lined up to use it. Signed up for aquatic classes twice a week. | Teelbee - It's hard when you're invited to someones house for a meal. How do you tell them you want control over the menu? Mona-Great that you did walk every day. Is there a YMCA or a YWCA in yout area. I hear they are cheaper tan health spas. Though my ymcA IS ALMOST $40 A MONTH. Cheap if you go most days but not if you blow it off too much. I hear the yw is much cheaper. Sunday-nothing Monday- 4.35 miles in 1 hour 15 minutes-dog in tow Well I finally got my whoosh I knew was around the corner-3 1/2 pounds down this week. | Mona, that's terrific that you walked every day! Awesome! Rob, congratulations on the 3.5 lbs! Whew! I bet you were excited to see that! (I sure would be). I walked for 90 minutes yesterday with DH in 97 degree heat. I was impressed that he was willing to go that long. Today, I got fast 30-minute walk. My excess 2-pounds from dinner Saturday was joined by a straggler during the night for a total of 2.5 pounds up today. The only saving grace was that I was down to 133.5 on Saturday am. Though I was on plan Sunday, I've been eating an extra 200-400 calories for the last 5 days. My rings are usually loose and I cannot budge them today - probably retaining water from the heat and extra calories and carbs over the weekend. I supposed I should go drink another bottle of water and help flush this out of my system (glug, glug, glug). ~~~Teelbee 174 (Mar. 2002, highest weight), 164 (Jan. 2003, begin LC) 164/135/137-134 remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic |

Teelbee- God bless you walking in that heat. Did 5.5 miles yesterday but it was a struggle. The rain from the hurricane combined with a full day of rain monday overflowed the lake. Parts of the path around the lake were under 6 inches of water so I had to climb up on then ridge and work my way slowly through dense thickets to get around it. finally reached a point that was unpassable and had to turn around. They were draining the lake at the dam so it should be dry again by next week. will have to walk at tanglewood the rest of the week. I reached 70 miles yesterday so with 6 more days I should have no problem reaching my goal. Rob

Rob, your walk sounds like quite an adventure! Did you take Sophie? I bet she'd love all that mud! The weather has cooled off a lot today. Supposedly, yesterday was 90, but it felt cooler to me. Today is only supposed to reach 79 I walked for over an hour yesteday. I'm scheduled to go to dance class tonight, so I may skip a walk today. I started to get a flare up of plantar fasciitis (foot pain) last week, so I don't want to overdo it with two weight bearing exercises in a day. ~~~Teelbee 174 (Mar. 2002, highest weight), 164 (Jan. 2003, begin LC) 164/135/137-134 remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic

Teelbee-I think skipping a day of walking is okay if you replace it with another activity. I also think it's okay to take a day off walking and do nada. That's what I did today. Yesterday I walked 3.25 miles but it took an hour. very hilly course that I never tried before. (and may never again). Rob

Well , I bought a talking pedometer at Eddie Bauer. It turns out my 20 walks at lunch time are 3/4 of a mile. I plan to speed it up and walk a full mile in that 20 minutes if I can. Victors are really just temporary quitters who then regroup with a vengeance.

I missed walking yesterday -- no good reason, just didn't get to it. :-( So, my rule is, if I miss a day (and didn't do an alternate exercise), I walk for twice as long the next day. I have dance class tonight, but I also plan to fit a walk it. The dance class is good, but I like the way I feel after walking, too. Mona, how did you calibrate your pedometer? I never could get mine set right. Rob, hill walking burns up way more calories than flat surface walks - at least, according to Diet Power: 65 cal/20 minutes: Walking 116 cal/20 minutes: Hill climbing, light 133 cal/20 minutes: Hill climbing, average 176 cal/20 minutes: Hill climbing, intense 120 cal/20 minutes: Walking uphill, gentle grade (3.5 mph) 181 cal/20 minutes: Walking uphill, medium grade (3.5 mph) 243 cal/20 minutes: Walking uphill, steep grade (3.5 mph) ~~~Teelbee 174 (Mar. 2002, highest weight), 164 (Jan. 2003, begin LC) 164/135/137-134 remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic

WEll, I just followed the instructions that came with my pedometer. My daughter helped me. We measured my stride which happens to be 2 feet ( I have short legs) and then set it up on the little device Victors are really just temporary quitters who then regroup with a vengeance.

Mona; I offer the suggestion to find a measured course that has mile markers. Like where they run foot and bicycle races. That measuring can be off by a lot. when you walk you might have a different stride than when measuring. I say this because 2 feet sounds low when you are really going along i think the stride lengthens. I know, Use your car odometer to measure a mile from your work and then every day make adjustments to your odometer until it's nearly exact. Teelbee-Thanks for the uphill info. good of you to make up the walk. I sorta do the same thing but not planned distances. Like yesterday I skipped out on walking so guilt made do the whole 7 miles around the lake. I'd definitely say a dance class PLUS a walk makes up for a skip day. They cleared the water off the lake path with bull dozers so it was dry. Sophie was disappointed in the lack of mud. when i was walking around the flooded parts the other day, she would walk through them and double back to join me on the ridge. I have 85.75 miles in for september - so i've passed my goal. 4 days left maybe i could reach 95.

skipped walking yesterday but did 4 miles today. One more day to go to make my revised goal of 95 miles. That means i only have to walk a mile and a quarter. Hmmm I think I'll set my goal at 98 miles. Rob
