Jestey-
It should of read SCT for Static Contraction Training- same principle as others with its own twist- the guy who promotes it is Pete Sisco-basicly you aim to reach failure with as much weight as possible but with his way, partials count(lifts that last shorter than 60secs) and you should increase your weight/lenth of lift every time out- if your not able to he believes you are over training- I let you know what I think at the end of the month.

Count me in this month too. I'll be doing weights 2X weekly and continiung to increase intensity, weight and duration. I'll also be walking miles and miles through the snow. It's not very interesting or exciting to read about, or to do actually, but I am committed. (or should be) Between eating right and excercising regularly, I should be swimsuit ready by Summer!

Good Thursday morning, all you exercise freaks! LLB - glad to have you with us. It's great to hear about some different programs.

Carolyn - you ask some good questions, and I'm probably not the right person to ask. I'm really NOT low-carbing at all, in fact, probably the opposite. I'm trying to eat clean, and I originally lost the first 25 lbs. with Atkins, but I have since moved to a diet you might associate more with body building or serious muscle toning.

Just to give you an idea, I'm currently eating in the neighborhood of 300 gms. of carbs daily! I try to make them whole grain, or fibrous (veggies) as much as possible.

There are many folks who combine low-carbing with exercise, and are quite successful. I just didn't see it as a way of life I would be able to sustain indefinitely!

Have I sent you the Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle e-book by Tom Venuto? It's great reading, and talks about many different ways of implementing a healthy diet, including low-carbing.

I think that as you approach goal weight, you'll want to "normalize" your eating a bit. That's what Atkins is all about, for sure. It sounds like your present program is working for you. If you feel like you're exercising too much, DEFINITELY take a day off every week. It's good for you. Even God rested on the seventh day!!

John, Tks for your comments, no you havnt sent me that ebook, feel free to email me at carolynsavon@peoplepc.com with it, looking forward to checking it out. I am currently happy with the atkins way of eating, and will be looking at other alternatives later, I just had questions, and had left those in the Jumpstart hoping that the "exercise experts" that come on this site would respond, maybe I will copy and make up a new topic and they will respond to that....

Water aerobics this morning. ---seems like when I don't get in my exercise my days dont get the same amount of energy ... hard to take a day off when you feel good when you do exercise.
Only wish my muscles would catch up, they always seem like they have been stretched out there and let me know I am working them out.

have a great day all.

Hi everybody,
The only exercise I get today was 40 mins of shoveling snow... I wish spring would get here quicker, I miss my schwinn.

John, were you lifting while low-carbing? If you were did you notice any energy/strength difference when you changed plans? The reason I ask is because I've been stalled on the same amount of weight/reps for a couple weeks. I've been studying numerous eating plans for lifting and most want 60%+ carbs in diet. I'm considering starting the Men's Health hardbody plan, the diet for dropping fat/building muscle calls for 15% protien 20% fat 65% carb. I'm thinking I'll start this one but carb consciously (carbs from veggies/fruit/whole grain). Any thoughts?

Thanks, have a great day all!

I've worked out everyday so far this month! I know we're not in too far, but don't know if I'll get one done today or not. I went to get up at 6:30 like normal and decded..."It's my birthday...I'm gonna sleep in!" So I slept in the extra 40 min I normally workout for.

I've been getting some good punching in. When I get really sad I get mad and force my aggressions out that way instead of crying. I must say I normally don't get sad,a nd no it's not just because it's my birthday. It's because this is my first birthday since Dad died and he would always wake we up way before I needed to be up with a great big happy birthday. He was a loud one! I didn't have that this year, and that's part of the reason I've been so down the past couple of days.

Tomorrow will be better, and only missing one day isn't nearly as bad as before when I never did anything! Well I'm off

I am new to the forum but would like to be in on this challenge. I will ride my stationary bike every other day for 40 minutes and include weights. Plus I walk my child to school on days when the weather cooperates (3 to 4 time/week). Let me know what all I need to do besides check in and let you know if I am keeping with the challenge. I started on the atkin's diet on October 20, 2003 and I am down 39 pounds with 80 still to go. HELP!!!

Welcome, HVoeller! You're doing great. This is a great place to check in daily - I find it really helps me stay on track for exercise.

Did UBWO this AM using the slow cadence. Again I really feel it and that makes me happy. Still need to tinker with the weight for the LBWO - no matter what I do, I just can't get a burn - I mean I am never sore afterwards, and I need to be to progress. I'm going to increase weights, again, add on two more exercises, and do slow cadence. This butt has got to go! I'll let you know next week if it works.

Have done no cardio this week, so will hop on the treadmill tomorrow morning.

Have a great day, everybody, and enjoy the snow

Hi All, TGIF again

Hvoeller - glad to have you here! Please keep checking in and letting us know how you're doing.

Jen - I've really found the squats and deadlifts work my glutes great. I don't get a lot of burn in the quads from those, but leg extensions seems to do the trick there. I really concentrate on squeezing the glutes on the push up, and I try to push up through my heels. I've also been using heavier weights for those. I've been doing about 160 on the squats, and 128 on the deadlifts. I might go heavier if I had a safer rack. If you have access to squat machines, you can really push the weight up. I know some women who squat over 200 in their sets!!

Lynda - Happy birthday. Too bad it's a bit bittersweet for you.

Carolyn - You might try www.lowcarbexercise.com The folks who run it, Graeme and Kate Street, are very into the low carb way of eating and total lifestyle. The first exercises with weights I did were from them. If it interests you, let me know, I'll sell you my beginner DVD. It's a great starting point and a nice total body workout 3 days a week.

Jeremy - Wow, that % of carbs sounds really high. I've read the following programs: Body for Life, Body Rx, Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, and The Body Sculpting Bible for Men. All of them were in the following range: 40/40/20 to 50/30/20. That's the ratio of carbs/protein/fat calories daily. Of course, "cleaner" carbs are always recommended. Fibrous (veggies) are wonderful, whole grain wheat and brown rice, sweet potatoes, yams for your starch carbs. Try to avoid the processed stuff. Again, I can send you the BFFM e-book for a good read.

Thanks for the input, John. Part of my problem, I think, is that I am using dumbells for the squats - and I just can't hold anything heavier than about 12 maybe 15 pounds (my fingers and wrists are absolute MURDER for days afterwards if I try) so I can't get the weights heavy enough. I don't plan onjoining a gym anytime soon, so will have to seek alternative home exercises. I have always had pretty muscular legs (even when encased in fat ) and I have always had a hard time "feeling the burn". I'll keep at it though because every little bit helps.

Happy Friday!

I started my new exercise program today, it sure is a change from circuit training. 8 mins elliptical to break a sweat, 3 sets each of 7 exercises- chest, back, obliques, and a 10 min run after the workout. No more running, I have rebuilt knees and it was murder.

John, thanks for the info. If you could, send me the BFFM (eldiablocaddy@yahoo.com), I like to have as much info as possible. I started the Men's Health diet today, but I adjusted the level of carbs to about 40%, whole foods only. I ate a bowl of Total w/skim milk before my workout, and two eggs on whole wheat bread after. That was 3hrs ago and I'm not "wrecked" yet, so I'll stick to it for the month and see how it works out. Low carb the rest of the day though.

It's great to see the group growing, good work everyone!

Have a great weekend,

Jeremy

Carolyn and Jeremy, the file is sent.

Jen - any chance you can get a barbell and some weights? The tough part is getting it up if you don't have a rack of some sort. I bought a little weight bench w/leg extension and simple rack for about $65 at a second-hand sports store. I bought used weights and barbell, too. I spent maybe $150 altogether. Of course, I have to keep it outside!! Here's a little pic of what I have. I made sure it will handle Olympic weights (big hole in the middle), and I got an Olympic barbell.

http://w3.gorge.net/jgarcia/bench.jpg

Jeremy - It was REALLY tough letting go of Atkins, since I had been so successful losing weight with it. I had a feeling inside like I couldn't stay with it forever, though. It seemed like too much fat for me personally, and I really felt deprived thinking about NEVER having certain foods again. I'm sorry, but there is NO low-carb substitute for real bread

I have lost a few pounds, but really changed the way my body is shaped, in the nearly 5 mos. since going off Atkins. I enjoy what I eat, and don't feel deprived. Atkins originally brought me to this forum. I enjoy the other forumites here, and it's great for moral support!!

John - I have a barbell and a pretty good set of Olympic weights, but no rack - so I'm scared to try to use the barbell for squats. DH is NOT a morning person, so I don't think he would take it kindly if I asked him to help m,e at 5:00AM! Maybe I'll look into a rack of some sort.

Thank you all for the wonderful greeting. I was unable to walk my son to school today as it was below zero here today. I am hoping to ride the bike and do some weights tonight. I'll let you all know if I can get to it. Thanks again for making me feel welcomed!!!
