Beth,
Thanks for starting a new thread.

We got home from contest last night about midnight.
WE WON!

Now prep for the state level starts........

My goal for the month is to learn to maintain! I was 137 this morning after two solid days of exposure to junk food and kids. Thank goodness for LC bars. They were a life saver.

Way to go Judy I am proud of you. Winning your competion and maintaining. You are doing great!

School was back to normal today. All of my students were present. You would have thought they had missed months though for what they had forgotten. They even forgot how to act while I was out of the room .

I got most of my winter decorations down and put up hearts in their place. I am so sick of snow! I do not want anymore snow days!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Monday!

Now comes the really big push......trying to up our scores. We got the state rankings today and we are #12 of the 25 advancing teams. We finished in the top ten for the last two years. Last year we were also #12 at this point. It's going to take some effort to get on up there, but I think the kids are excited. I hope it will hold and provide the push we need to get over the hump.

We are really falling behind on our postings!

I had an early dismissal today. It does not have to be made up !

I have also loss 6.5 pounds this week (I gained 11 pounds back from eating HC . I am sure I will lose the rest. It is amazing how fast you can regain and lose it again if you stay on plan. I feel so much better staying LC. Why do I eat the LC crap ???

Judy, I hope you do great in the competition .

I just had one of those "I can't believe I didn't think of this before" kind of teaching ideas today. One of the hardest things for my kids is to nail their speeches. The speech has to be between 3.5 and 4 minutes -- preferably without a note card. I'm going to record them on the computer, then copy the file 10 or so times and burn it onto a CD. That way they can listen to it over and over just like listening to music -- get the "beat", the pace and the words down just like learning the words to a song. I feel smart tonight.

Judy, one of my fields of study is developing ways to use all the senses in all levels of teaching. Some people are visual learners, some are aural learners, some have to have hands-on experience to learn, etc. From what I've read, once you've heard something at least 16 times it becomes a permanent part of your memory -including the tone, pace, pitch, and inflection. It's how we learn the words of popular songs without even realizing it -and whether we want to or not. Sounds like you've come up with a terrific learning tool.

I'm finally back to doing some hall walking. Not a lot, but some. I'm going to hold off on the stairs for a while. I was able to go bacl to Curves this week too -felt great!

Judy, I start my math classes with a multiplication rap. I am hoping I can get he kids to learn at least the 0-5 facts by the end of the year. I hope listening to the CD helps your students remember. If you have the time, maybe they can put it to music and make it into a song. Good Luck!

This has been such an exhausting week. We had an hour delay on Tuesday and a 2 hour early dismissal on Thursday. It feels like I am not teaching, just introducing. We spent yesterday getting caught up on all of this past week's work. I hope we can get a full week in next week.

I have 2 students who are drinving me to drink . I had an IEP meeting with Brandon's father and he was talking about retaining him. There is no way I want this kid again next year! He does not do or turn in his work. I have tried everything short of paying him to motivate him. Nothing has worked. Dad supposedlyhad a long talk with him and he is going to improve. I sure hope so. The other student lives with his aunt, his mom kicked him out of the house. He is obviously an alcohol/drug baby. He needs to be on meds, but they will not put him on it. He is in Children's Services custody and they have the last say. I had to put him in ALC-in school suspension-on Thursday for profanity and yesterday I told him he had misspelled the spelling word he was writing 10 times and he started to argue with me. That really burns me up . I am going to put him in ALC on Monday for it. I am worried about it hoguh, I know his aunt is getting fed up with him and may send him out. I woulkd hate for me to be the cause of this, but I also cannot allow him to get away with being disrespectful. Do you have any ideas on what else I can do to handle him. He is getting so much worse.

Where are you Beth???

Have a great weekend.

Hey everyone! I haven't posted here at all this month. I sort of forgot and I have been extra busy.

I have several of my former students that are now taking other math classes with various instructors/professors that have been coming back to me for help. Apparently, they don't like the teachers that they have now and don't understand the things being covered in class.

And then there are a few that aren't even being taught. Their teacher gives them assignments without going over it first, then they come to class with the homework done and then he goes over a few of the problems. Now, this instructor is part-time and I have heard complaints from three of my former students that are currently in his class. One student called me and now wants to add my class, because he has no idea what is going on. He failed the last test and talked to the instructor about it - and basically said he had another instructor that was really good and knew how to teach and he would see if he could take that class instead. So, I talked to my division chair about it, told her everything that these students have said, and she agreed that he could add my class. I even called the admissions office and they said it was fine if we were in agreement.

This is all good, esp. since I am going up for promotion this year. But, it is definitely keeping me busy, cause I can't say no to them.

Today, I need to grade one more set of homework papers, type two tests, write up one test, and work on my promotion notebook and fps. I would love to get the notebook done in the next week, so that a few can look over it at work before I turn it in.

Once March gets here, all of this paperwork will be done, then I will just be busy with all of these students and the normal test making and grading.

Apart from the whole school thing, I am finally back to sig. After gaining three pounds over christmas and dropping to 143 a couple of times, I am finally at 142 as of this morning.

Oh my gosh, you can tell we are all busy. Our thread is so far down that it looks like we aren't even active anymore. BUT...... here's some really good news......

We have a four day weekend! YEA Of course, some of my time will go to practice and review with the Aca Dec team, but, it's not a "real" school day, so I can handle that. I am so ready for a day off!

I am still around. I've just been super busy. The only reason that I have time to visit now is because we have the kids on lock down due to drug activity (2nd day in a row). I'm basically babysitting right now. I have two full classes to myself. The other class' teaher went to a tribunal, but she's back and just refusing to come help watch her own kids!

I'm doing really well and am actually in ketosis right now. I've been so busy that I've had to sub EAS shakes for some of my meals, but they seems ot curb my cravings. Tonight I'm leaving town on a business trip with my DH. There will be many temptations, but I'm going to try to stick as close as possoble to plan.

Hope everyone is having a great week.

I am glad I work in an elementary school where we do not have drug problems. Although I do have a student who acts drugged. It is so weird, when we came back from Christmas break the whole fist week she was on task and had all of her work finished before class was over. She spent free time on the computers. The second week of school she went back into her slump. She acts like she is in a fog. I do not really think she would be doing drugs. She is a sweet little girl, but I do worry. Her mother died from an overdose of oxycotin. I had a student last year who was always sluggish because mom smoked pot with him in
the room. Second hand smoke. There are times I think it would be nice to teach some "normal" kids.

Judy, I wish I had a 3 day weekend . We have use Monday as a make up day. Are you off tommorrow or Tues.?

Elyssa, I hope the other instructor does not get upset at you because the kids would rather be with you. How are things going with the "cheater"? Any more problems?

I am still 2 pounds above my sig weight, but I have loss 9 pounds since last Monday. I will hopefully be back by next week.

I feel like I am talking to myself here

I weighed in this morning withing half pound of my sig weight. I am never going to regain the weight again!

I hope everyone was able to resist the candy from students. I gave mine away. I had to accept it from them.

Have a great weekend!

Sorry to be MIA --- it's been busy around here. However, the four day weekend was much appreciated. We got Friday (an inservice comp day) and will also be off on Monday. I do have to go in for about three hours to review with my academic team. We go to our state contest at the end of this month. This year instead of the usual 6 weeks between regional and state, we only have 4. So, we are having to take advantage of every possible study opportunity.

Susan, I guess it's a good thing that we got the holiday when we did. We actually got snow yesterday and this morning. It wouldn't have been nearly enough to call school, but lots of kids would have figured out how to take a day to play. This is the first time I remember having snow in the last three or four years. We are much more likely to get ice. Because of all the pine trees in the area, ice is considerably more dangerous. Pine trees will break without much stress. Thanks goodness that our snow didn't turn to rain, and that the temp stayed up.

I'm treating myself to some sewing time. I'm redoing a suit right now. It was pretty expensive when I bought it about 11 years ago. It fits again, and with the removal of the massive shoulder pads and resetting the sleeves, it will be very stylish again. I think this is the end of any possible "clothing standards" that I may have. The only reason that I still have it is that I bought it for my mother's funeral and just couldn't bring myself to get rid of it.

Back to the sewing room........
