| My husband is diabetic and I finally got him to agree to join me on Atkins. He is type 2, and does not really have a weight problem. But he does not monitor his blood . . . that is going to change as he realizes he HAS to and is ordering a new monitor as I write this. He currently controls it with oral meds and exercise, but I feel he eats too many carbs and carbs = sugar, right? And his doctor is talking about putting him on a new insulin (shot) that he would take once a day. So my question to you is: which book would be better for a diabetic low carb plan, the Atkins or Bernstein? Thanks for your help!

| Actually, if diabetes is his MAIN concern and you want him to get serious about controlling his blood sugar, he NEEDS to read, "The Schwarzbein Principle," by Diana Schwarzbein, MD. This is an AWESOME book and it convinced me to eat low-carb for the rest of my life! Dr. Schwarzbein is an endocrinologist who worked almost exclusively with diabetic patients and through her own research found that carbs (and the "diabetic diet") were a diabetic's worst enemies. Her approach is scientific, logical, and proven. Her stories are absolutely jaw-dropping. I am a type II diabetic and I control my bg/insulin COMPLETELY with diet and exercise -- thanks to her book. I highly recommend it. PS: I follow a modified version of Atkins; I don't really follow Schwarzbein's plan, per se, but it was HER BOOK that convinced me to stick with it. And it does the absolute best job of explaining it in plain English!

| Thank you Summer! I will buy that book. I did buy the Atkins one, but I am going to return it. Told me nothing new. We are waiting for his new BG monitor so we can start him in ernest on this WOE. He does like his cereal and milk in the AM. I will replace that with LC options. At least get his consumption of carbs down. Again, my thanks!

| I know you know this, but for the sake of newbies reading the board, he MUST be under the supervision of his doc while on the diet - contstantly monitoring his BG and working with the doc on adjusting his meds. But I'm really glad he is going this way - he may very well find he can greatly reduce his meds or come off them altogether. Or, he just may be able to manage his sugar much better. Either way, good outcomes, hopefully. |

| Andrea, Thank you for your advice. He has been a diabetic for about 12 years and not exactly very good at taking his BG. He always says, as long as he's feeling good, he's OK. Well, he had a little run-in with blood vessels breaking behind his eye. Eye doctor says it's due to his diabetes. Waiting for some of the blood to clear before they do some laser surgery to clear up the rest of the blood. I think this has scared him. The new BG monitor arrived Friday and he is now starting to test his BG. Before going LC all the way (currently, he really only does a LC dinner) he will talk with his doctor. Doctor want to move him from oral to a new insulin shot that is taken once a day. I think this is another reason why he is thinking of switching to lower carbs. He hates shots! I did get the Schwarbein book from the library. Wow. First chapter pretty much sums it up!

| I believe I have read every book out there on low carb and diabetes, and I agree, the Schwarzbein Principle does the best job of explaining how it works. And, as Summer said, it is also the book that made me decide to make a long term committment to this lifestyle. I also don't follow it exactly, I eat less carbs, more along the Atkins line. The Atkins Diabetes book was a big disappointment to me -- nothing new, and a sterner, almost scolding tone to it, unlike Dr. Atkin's "you can do it" enthusiastic style. I've had too many doctors like that. |
