| Welcome, Mary. I was pre-diabetic when I started this way of eating as well. I have kept my blood sugars in normal range for over 6 years now without any medication. You may want to read the Atkins Diabetes Revolution, which is geared for those who have blood sugar problems. It certainly helps if one's doctor understands the importance of the low carb lifestyle for those of us with some degree or another of insulin resistance. Since your doctor seems to be indifferent to nutrition, you may just be better off educating yourself on the relationship between macro-nutrients and blood sugar. IMHO, the Diabetes Revolution is a good place to start. There are other books, as well. If you explore this diabetic forum, you'll find a number of threads on the topic. Please make yourself at home at LCE.

| Sunny, low carb seems to be a no-brainer when it comes to diabetes. Your body turns carbs into sugar. Less carbs ingested = less sugar for your body to process. (Note: this does NOT mean NO carbs.) I am not diabetic, but my husband is. Type 2, medications and exercise. After cooking my lc dinners for several months (he does the cooking), he noticed that his night glucose readings required a DECREASE in his meds after eating lc dinners. So he adopted a modified lc diet, since he does not need to lose weight. It is working well for him. Good luck!

| Hi, I'm new here just signed up cause I saw your entry. I am having to go on a diet because of my doctor because I found out that I'm borderline diabetic. My boyfriend is going into a frenzy its kind of cute. But anyways, the diet that I'm on is a mix between atkins and south beach diet and I kind of like it. My boyfriend is on it with me which kind of helps me stick with it. But don't worry, every diet is different for every one else. This diet might not suit you but it doesn't hurt to try. I know that you can do this though and I wish you the best of luck! |

| GeeGee, Type I diabetes is very different from Type II. Type I diabetes is an auto-immune disorder and the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas are either dead or inflammed. This is an irreversibe process and so a type I diabetic will always have to rely on insulin since his/her body cannot produce insulin. In type II diabetes, the pancreas produce insulin, only the body is unable to utilize it effectively. So while a low carb diet will actively help type II diabetes, the same cannot be said about type I. You should ask your doctor if you can switch since you might need to adjust your level of insulin for a lower carb way of life. Hope this helps. Maggie please correct me if I have made some wrong statement. Anu. |

| You're correct, Anu. The only thing I'd add is that a type 2 diabetic, over time, can get to the point (from years of the pancreas pouring out tons of insulin to try and overcome the insulin resistance in the receptor cells) of actually burning out the beta cells. They move from too much insulin to not producing enough. GeeGee, this way of eating can be helpful to a type 1 diabetic, but requires VERY, VERY monitoring of insulin. Dr. Bernstein, as Junie mentions, is a type 1 diabetic. If you, or someone you know, is a type 1 diabetic the first thing to do is check out Dr. Bernstein and then find a doctor who's receptive to this approach. It really does require a close partnership between the type 1 and his/her health care professional. Insulin reactions can be deadly, so a very careful calibration of food/exercise/insulin is required.

| I am hyperglycemic... and I used Atkins with no problems at all.. I use chromium picolinate 200 with the glucose tolerance factor. It has helped me so very much. I have had less problems with my sugar dropping since using it. I also discovered I cannot touch ANYTHING with sugar in it. Makes it spike quickly, and drop rapidly. Go for it... Atkins is great with this problem.
