| Recently I have noticed that when I eat carbs such as ice cream, chocolate and pasta I get incredably tired. I can hardly function. Is this a sign of pre-diabetis? |

| Welcome, busymom. It's certainly a sign that the items you mention are having an effect on your blood sugar levels, but that doesn't mean for sure that your glucose metabolism is necessarily impaired. A visit to your doctor to be evaluated for diabetes, pre-diabetes or syndrome X (which includes diabetic tendencies) is really the only way to assess your status. He/she'll probably want to do some tests which might include a 3 or 5 hour Glucose Tolerance Test (with insulin levels drawn during the test), a lipid profile (to see how you're handling fats) and an A1c (which is a retrospective look at blood sugar levels). These will allow your md to get a very accurate picture of your glucose metabolism and overall metabolic status. Hope you'll make yourself at home!

| Ditto what Maggie said! Do make an appointment to have a glucose tolerance test done to see exactly *how* these foods are affecting your glucose/insulin levels. If you can head diabetes off early, you'll be way ahead of the game! Good luck to you,

| I get very sleepy when I eat too many carbs. I always have. That was one of the problems with my "diet" before. I got so tired in the afternoon. I had the glucose tests when I was pregnant and was fine throughout. So I don't know about it being a sign of diabetes. But it was a normal thing for me when I ate high carb to have to nap on the weekends when I was home with baby and he was napping. Now with low carb I don't have to at all.

| Thank you for your replies. I suspect that my problem is mainly my horrible "diet." I tend to eat pure junk food as it is easy to grab. I have three little boys who keep me very busy and I just don't take the time to cook good food for myself. (I HATE to cook!) Noel, how did you change from eating high carbs? I HAVE to do that as well, but I can't seem to get the will power to give up all the sugar, flour, ect... Willpower seems to have left the building for me! I have heard that if one can get past the three day mark that it is much easier. Did you find this to be true? |
