| My in-laws are long haul truck drivers and while they were in town for Mother's Day Weekend, my mother-in law had her yearly physical exam. When she returned from the Dr. office she said her blood sugar was around 230 and they wanted her to fast and come back the next day to take a fasting blood sugar. The results of that were 380. They told her she needed to see her regular Dr. (she was at a clinic that provides the physicals for the driver's to get a medical clearance card). She made an appointment with a Dr. that could fit her in right away, one she has not seen before. She does not have a regular Dr. Anyway, this Dr. tested her blood sugar, it was 580, told her she had Type II Diebetes, gave her a two prescriptions, one for her Blood Sugar and one to protect her liver and sent her on her way. When I asked my mother-in-law what kind of diet changes he has suggested she said that when she asked him about diet/nutrition he told her that as long as she was on the medication she did not have to worry about her diet. I have a very limited knowledge of Diebetes, but this advice seemed all wrong to me. What is a 'normal' blood sugar range? Is 580 really high, cause it sounds super high to me. She seemed to have almost a Ho Hum attitude towards her new found condition and this has me worried and not a little bit annoyed at the Dr. who seems to have the same attitude. I convinced her to take my Shwarzbein Principle book I read a year or two ago with her to read when they left. They won't be coming back till July and I am concerned about her, especially if she does not change her eating habits at all as the Dr. suggested. Anyway, this was more to vent my frustrations more than anything else, but any comments/suggestions would be most appreciated |

| Geeze Louise!! I was just reading through the stickies in the Diebetic Support forum and 580 is REALLY high! I am really going to encourage her to go to another Dr. when they are back in town. Your right Kim, the truck stop food isnt exactly the healthiest! Neither are the snacks they keep in the truck with them, and my mother-law-in has said that when she is driving she eats as she goes out of boredom. Her favorite snack is gummy bears. They buy them by the INDUSTRIAL bagfuls, like GIANT Costco type bags. |

| ack... i THOUGHT that sounded extremely high.... yeah.. man.. i forgot about the vending snacks... LORD have MERCY when we used to travel i was the SAME way... eat all the way and THEN stop to eat..*yikes*... and STILL i consider them the GOOD OL' DAYS *L*.. not sure if its good for a diabetic.. but one SEMI healthy thing we used to eat by the INDUSTRIAL sized bagful on trips were sunflower seeds in the shell.. i NOW get almonds... celery and sometimes carrots cucumber slices.. cauliflower bagged and kept in a little cooler.. its hard .. but not IMPOSSIBLE to teach an old dog new tricks... i am one living breathing example of a DOG dancing through hoops ...*L* |

| Very high. Normal fasting is under 110. Based on your MIL's description, the doctor she saw sounds like an idiot.

| Somewhere in the last decade or so the ADA (American Diabetes association) has relaxed it's ban on sugar. I grew up with a type 1 diabetic sister and I remember how adamant my mom was about zero sugar. Of course candy was allowed during low blood sugar reactions. My sister admitted recently that she would purposely let her blood sugar get low so she could eat sweets. LOl Many people think that the ADAs changes were to the detriment of Diabetics. |

| That blood sugar is way out of control and the doctor WAS an idiot to just give her medication and send her on her way. She definitely should get another appointment with someone to discuss the impact this diagnosis will have on her life. Maybe they have a diabetic clinic she can go to?

| Talked to my Mother in law last night. Her blood sugar is down a little, she said it ranges between 200 and 300, which is still too high but better than 580. She is reading The Shwarzbein Principle that I gave her and following the diet in the book. I hope she sticks to it. She is going to try and see a Dr. next week in whatever town they happen to be in...I hope this DR. gives her a little more advice then the last! |
