    Question New & Confused

I am a 28 year old mother of two and was told by my doctor that I had high levels on Insulin. I am borderline diabetic! The doctor told me to cut back on carbs and be more active she also put me on Glucofage. The more I am reading the more conflicting things I am reading. Has any one been through this stage and might have some advice?

I'm also border-line diabetic, but I'm not on medication for it yet. There are several others on here who are diabetic or borderline and control their conditions with low carb.

I do Atkins, but I know that some of the other plans also work well for diabetics.

I had done Atkins a couple of years ago, and had started reading my book again last night. When I had done it then, it was just for the weight. I am 5'6" and weight 178, but I carry it very well. I wasn't sure what others thought of the Atkins diet. How long have you been borderline, and I am glad to see you are not on medicine yet. Thanks so much for responding.

I have probably been borderline for at least 5 years. When I got pregnant, I was diagnosed with diabetes, but since there were no pre-pregnancy bloodtests, they couldn't say for sure. I had been on Atkins before I got pregnant, got pregnant, and started eating a lot of high carb foods. I had to eat fairly low carb throughout my entire pregnancy PLUS I was on insulin shots. After my son was born, we followed up for several months and it was pretty stable... high but not quite borderline. I've had a lot of symptoms though since then on and off, and recently I went to the doctor for something else after being on Atkins for a month and tested borderline. I know that if I had gone in before I had been on Atkins, it would have come back full-blown diabetes and I would have had to be on medication. I'm 5'7" and currently weigh about 245 and was at 275 when I started back on Atkins the middle of September. I have to go back and have my bloodwork done again sometime in the spring... I'm hoping to put it off until May so that I can get a true reading of how this is working for me.

I am sorry forgive my ignorance, but what is the New Years and Valentines Challange? I noticed it looks like you have your start weight and present weight, and goal weight is that correct? What is this challange?

    Welcome, Alysia, from another "pre-diabetic".

(I use quotes because, as the research shows, type2 diabetes is a continuum)

I've normalized my blood sugars and kept them there for many years now. You can do it, too.

Hope you'll make yourself at home here.

Yes Alysia, you interpreted my numbers correctly.

The Valentine's Challenge is where you can set a goal for yourself (weight loss, exercise, whatever) and try to make the goal by Valentine's Day.

The 100 Day challenge is to be CHEAT-FREE for 100 Days. Today is my day 8.

my doc told me i was headed for diabetes as well, and suggested lc. you may well want to compare some plans, get the book for whichever one sounds best and try it out. since your doc is supportive, he can help you figure out exactly what impact it has. i do know there are lots of folks around her who have dealt with similar issues lc'ing. i think you're moving in the right direction!
