Question Hypoglycemia and LC??

Hello I have just been diagnosed with Hypoglycemia. And insuling resistance.I dont know a lot about either just yet.
But my doctor wants me to LC.
I need to lose about 50 pounds. What plan are you following?
I know hypoglycemia is a little different then diabetes but I think it's the same type of eating.
I have done SBD before and I did lose 15 pounds that way.But It was so restrictive.I did Atkins for about a week and lost my mind looking for bread.LOL
I am going to have to commit to something though.I dont want full blown diabetes or to get any fatter or unhealthier.(is that even a word?)
Anyways I appreciate any advice or thoughts you may have on this..
THanks!
Evette

Welcome, Evette.

Hypoglycemia appears to be part of a spectrum of metabolic disorders which includes diabetes. Sometimes the hypoglycemic response is to an elevated blood glucose level at the start of the glucose tolerance test.

You had one, right? Do you have all the numbers?

As for choosing a low carb eating plan, that's an individual decision. For me Atkins was the easiest to follow, but you'll have to research the various plans and decide which one's right for you.

Hope you'll make yourself at home.

Evette, I'm glad to hear that some enlightened doctor has actually recommended the low-carb lifestyle for you. And you've come to a good place (right here!) for information and support.

There are many low-carb plans to choose from, but my guess is most of them totally eliminate white flour (in all its forms). One helpful aspect of Atkins is that after a few days, cravings for sugar, starch, and bread diminish, along with feelings of hunger. But you do have to survive those first days. We can help you with that if you want to give Atkins another try.

Atkins is one of the simplest and most effective low-carb plans out there. And in its later phases, whole grains can be added back in, in moderate quantities, in the form of crackers, bread, pasta, tortillas, etc.

Keep in mind that what you have may be a lifetime condition. Learning to eat in an entirely new way--not just a temporary diet--will keep you healthy for the long term. You're worth it! We can help.

Check out Laura Richard's book Secrets of Low-carb Success which compares several popular low-carb plans. Or read around the forums here, and ask some questions. Eventually, you will want to get the book that explains your chosen plan in detail, and follow it to the letter. That will guarantee your success.

Best wishes.

Evette, welcome. One thing you might consider if you miss bread is the one minute muffin. There's a sticky on it in the food and cooking forum. It's very low carb, very versatile, and is a great alternative to bread. Lots of people have one (or 2) every day.

I follow Atkins, and find it to be very generous in the variety of foods I can have. I eat more veggies on Atkins than I did before. And I feel 500% better, too.

Barb and Maggie are right about researching and finding the low carb plan that works for you. Perhaps Atkins or South Beach aren't your route, but you'll find what fits into your eating and life style.

Wishing you much success, and much better health.
