Default Reading labels

Today we went grocery shopping. I bought two bags of pork rinds. One plain, one barbeque. Usually the barbeque ones are too hot for my tastes, but I wanted to try a different brand. I was so eager to try them, I opened them on the way home.

I looked at the carb count. It said 0 grams carb, 0 grams sugar. I liked the taste, not spicy at all. I ate quite a few.

Later, I was feeling the familiar high blood sugar symptoms. All I had eaten for several hours was the pork rinds. My blood sugar was 183.

I checked the label. Sugar was the third ingredient, followed by wheat flour, and soy flour. I am beginning to think I am allergic or sensitive to wheat. I know I must be extremely sensitive to any carbs at all.

For breakfast today I had ham and scrambled eggs and my blood sugar hit 158.

I am getting so frustrated.

As for the pork rinds, I'm surprised that - even fudging - there could be a 0 carb count on BBQ pork rinds. Especially given the ingredients in that particular brand. What were they calling a serving size?

What was your fasting BGL (before your breakfast)?

Both Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Atkins have books on low carbing for diabetics. I highly recommend them both.

My fasting BS that morning was 110.

Tonight I had scrambled eggs, with a little zuchinni, a little green bell pepper, a little green onion, a little bit of ham. My blood sugar hit 215, (the highest it has been in over a month) I also took my Actos. I am beginning to think Actos is the culprit.

I have suspected that for a long time. One time I took a fasting blood sugar. It was 115. I took my Actos. Didn't eat or drink anything and my blood sugar went up to 141.

What is Actos, and what is it for? I'm not diabetic, so I don't know what a lot of these terms mean.
I do know that for some, balancing their blood sugar is a real pain. I feel for you.

Actos is supposed to increase insulin sensitivity. So the body cells absorb more of the sugar that is circulating in the blood. One problem with diabetics is, the cells have forgotten how to absorb blood glucose. Blood glucose is essentially what feeds the cells and gives them the energy to perform their various task. The brain especially needs glucose.

So a diabetic's cells can literally starve to death and die with what they need passing right in front of them untouched. Kind of like a man dieing of thirst right beside a waterfall.

Actos also stops the liver from throwing more glucose out into the blood that is all ready saturated with glucose, The liver tries its best to get more glucose into the cells by throwing more out into the blood stream. The liver doesn't recognise that the blood is all ready saturated with glucose. It just knows that the cells of the body are hungry. So it could be that in my body at least, the Actos is keeping the blood sugar from getting out of the system in some way and staying in the blood. I don't know.

All I know is that today I had bacon for breakfast. Nothing else. Totally no carb. Everyone knows that protein and fat don't raise blood sugar or insulin. I had nothing else between breakfast and lunch except for black coffee early this morning and tea sweetened with stevia.

As I was preparing lunch, I began to feel as if my bs was high. It was 161. I wanted to get it down before I ate. I took cinnamon and apple cider vinegar. It went up to 170. I took some supplements, it went up to 181.

I was hungry and frustrated and decided to go ahead and eat anyway. My bs dropped to 170 immediately after I ate.

My body is so very confused, poor thing. And I just can't figure out what to do to help it. Its like a baby with colic and I am trying desperately to comfort it and nothing seems to work.

Oh, I do feel for you. It has to be frustrating to be doing all you can and still have such wild fluctuations.

It is frustrating trying to get a line on one's particular metabolism. I can, however, help with one thing. You're brain functions quite nicely on ketone bodies.

I really recommend the above books to anyone with T2d. They were extremely helpful to me.

p.s. both vinegar and cinnamon have carbs.

I called to company to make a comment about the no carb, no sugar claims on the bag. They gave me the run around, saying that the counts complied with government regulations which were confusing even for them. Serving size was 1/2 an ounce, someone asked that question and I forgot to answer it.

Anyway, they said they would send me some of the regular kind of pork rinds for my enjoyment.

And speaking of reading labels. I was at wally world the other day to buy some frozen fish. On the tab in the freezer section, it was hand written, "wild caught" I picked up the bag. On the bag it said, "farm raised" What the ___.
