Over on the Atkins board is a request for Type II (insulin-dependent) diabetes info from Frizbee in England. His sister-in-law is being told to eat MINIMUM 150g carbs a day with Type II!
I told him to get Protein Power Lifeplan and Schwarzbein Principle for her, but if anyone knows of any specific web links, I know he'd be grateful to get them.

Monica,
I thought it was 50 grams...maybe I mis-read.

It's a shame dj's computer is discombobulated. I think SHE is the expert on diabetes control.

-I put this over in the Atkins thread.-
A very useful site would be
http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/

This is Dr. Richard Bernstein's site. His book is Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution.

I just LOVE his story; he was trained as an engineer, but after being diagnosed with diabetes went to medical school. He refused to accept that all the ills that can come with diabetes are inevitable. He experimented extensively on himself and found that by controlling his blood sugar via diet, he stayed healthy and drastically reduced his dependence on insulin.

This book really made my blood boil to think of how some nutritionists and doctors push carbs, carbs, carbs on diabetic patients when that's the last thing they need. People literally eat themselves into the grave on medical advice - it's tragic.

I posted some information for him on a sliding scale system for carbs that most insulin dependant diabetics in the US are encouraged to follow. I'll see if I can find a website for him as well.

Well, all I can say is, I have type II diabetes (diagnosed in 1999) and a LC WOE is the ONLY diet that keeps my blood sugar/insulin stable! I tried a low-fat/complex carb diet and my bloodsugar shot up. I even tried vegetarianism; all it did was increase my sugar cravings and my blood sugar was up and down all the time! As long as I stay on LC, my blood sugar is normal and stable and I don't need medication.

As a DM2 who has managed & controlled w/diet for almost 5 years,
i most heartily recommend reading Dr. Bernstein's book, Diabetes Solution

It is directed to DM1, but is extremely useful for DM2s, too, and may effectively enable them to learn how to manage their diabetes with diet -- reading it convinced me to take a chance on the lowcarb food plan, when my docs were calling down doom and disaster in re lowcarb.

Someone has posted the link to Dr. Bernstein's website.

i don't know about Dr. Atkins newest book (haven't seen it yet), but several of his older books have extensive details about DM and low carb, which are very effectively documented.

One of the most helpful sites i found when i was first learning to manage my DM2 is this one:
Joslin Diabetes Center. They do suggest too many carbohydrates, but much of the information is very good. http://www.joslin.harvard.edu/

The next link is to the Joslin Diabetic Library -- a page with links to all aspects of diabetes: http://www.joslin.harvard.edu/educat....shtml#monitor

This one is a page that contains a long list of links to studies about lowcarb. http://www.lowcarb.ca/newsmenu/researchfor.html

And.
This last one is a really good and clear explanation (up-to-date) about insulin and its metabolic effects. http://www.mercola.com/2001/jul/14/insulin.htm

Well, enough for now. If i can be of any assistance with more links or w/ more info about day-to-day living and ways to get all of these new things organized so that she can live with the condition, and not be overwhelmed, please feel free to email (addy under profile) if you post and i happen to miss it.

Best wishes to you and to your family,
dj
