Hey Irishman and WELCOME! ![]() I'm assuming you mean type II diabetes??? I was diagnosed with type II about 2.5 years ago... My endocrinologist threatened to put me on Glucophage if I didn't get my blood glucose and insulin levels down. I immediately went on Atkins and within 6 months, I had "reversed" my diabetes diagnosis. I have managed to keep my blood glucose levels down ever since by staying low-carb. While I have not done South Beach, I do think it is a very good lower carb plan because (I believe) it incorporates the glycemic index. This is something EVERY diabetic should learn more about! That said, if you have a LOT of weight to lose or if your insulin/glucose levels are way out of whack, you *might* want to try a stricter plan like Atkins or Protein Power to get faster control over those levels. Just my .02! HTH, Summer www.herstorygirl.com

Welcome, Irishman. 'Nuther type2 in remission for many years now. I've maintained normal blood sugars for 5 years now, lost a bunch more weight than I had hoped for and turned my terrible lipid profile around completely - latest risk ratio was 2.3 (4 is good). I'm not thoroughly familiar with the South Beach diet because what I'm doing "ain't broke" so I haven't needed to "fix it." LOL! But it does seem to be a sensible plan, if somewhat limited in fat selection. However, if it stablizes your blood glucose levels, that's a primary concern. Make yourself at home and keep us posted on your progress! Maggie 5'1" ~~ Atkins since '98 (160+) Maintaining nicely (110 +/-) ~~Redhead until further notice! ~~

I've been a type 1 diabetic for 8 years now. I'e tried lots of diets and gone off lots of diets. Yes I did do south beach and it's a sensible way to eat. I still do eat like that but I'm doing my own thing and counting calories.I think south beach is a good first step to try. Also you should get your doctor to send you to a dietician so you can learn about counting carbs and how certain foods affect you, and read tons of books on nutrition and diabetes.Good Luck to you!!

Welcome Irish ![]() One of the first things I'd recommend you read is The Diabetes Diet War. And then read through all the info in the 2 "sticky" threads at the top of this forum. I use a combination of Atkins and Protein Power. LCE member since March 2002
