Hello all
I usually don't post in this forum but I do visit. I have a question and I would appreciate any replies with information or opinions.
My sister is a type 1 diabetic (going on 40 years) and she has decided to try low carb as of a week ago. She says she only wants to lose 10 pounds. She takes insulin shots 3 to 5 times daily. She has called me several times this week with questions about what she should eat. She called me yesterday and asked what would be best to eat when she is having an insulin reaction. Normally she would have candy or sugar laced OJ. But she wants to know what would be fairly quick to stabilize blood sugar. I didn't know what to tell her and said to try an apple. We had to work with what was in the house since she felt the reaction coming on at the time she called me. She;s very happy with low carb over all. she's only had 3 reactions in a full week. 3 reactions a day is not abnormal for her.

Rob, I asked DH about this one.
About all she can do is use the same type and amount of glucose each time she has a reaction, and then keep a log off how much she has to take each time. Something that's easily portable like glucose tablets, each one has a specific amount of fast-acting carbs. He uses candy orange slices. Each one is 5 carbs. Depending on how low his blood sugar is he'll eat 1-4 of them.
Then, once her BG is stabalized, she'll need to eat a protein snack to avoid any rebound affect.

Hope that helps some.
