Advice for Diabetic Newbies
How about if some of us vetereans post some links and advice for any newbies with blood sugar issues who might drop by.

My suggestion for the first book to read for anyone with diabetes or a family history of diabetes:
Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution

The importance of a low carb diet for diabetes; an article about how "the nutrition advice given to most diabetics might be killing them":
Diabetes Diet War

And a link to an online low glycemic index:
The Glycemic Index

For any Newbies; welcome!
As always, check with your doctor before making any changes to your diet or medications!
If you have questions for us, please start a new topic so we can address it individually.
TIA (Thanks in advance)

Hi there!

You've found an "Information Only" thread.

These threads are not checked frequently, since we didn't anticipate getting questions here. We just noticed that some people ARE posting questions, so we're closing the thread to new posts.

Your questions are important to us and we don't want any being overlooked!

So, if you have questions, visit the main forum area. http://www.lowcarbeating.com/bb/ Browse around the different forums and see if there's a discussion going on which addresses your question and jump on in!

But the BEST way to get responses that address your particular concern is to start your own thread.

If you'd like to start your own thread with a question or comment, just go to the forum of your choice. At the top left hand side, you'll see a button which says "New." When you click it, a menu will come down. Here, you choose "Topic."

A box will come up with two windows to fill in. The top one is where you give your thread a title. Like "What kind of scale to buy?" or "Need help calculating net carbs." The bottom window is where you post your question or comment.

Have a great day!

We look forward to your posts!

Thanks for the links, Brightlady. I was initially attracted to LC because I'm diabetic. My doc told me that losing weight while limiting carbs was the best way to prevent having to go on medications. So far it's working for me. My numbers are good and the doc is very pleased!

I am not officially a diabetic but I am diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome, or Syndrome X. It is fairly new in the medical world I am told. It is a grouping of symptoms present in people who are suseptable for Type II diabetes as they get older. Blood sugars are and remain in the high normal range. They may spike into the diabetic range but the body still produces insulin. It is just insulin resistant.

Cholesterol is an issue with this disorder. It is not that the bad cholesterol is high it is the good cholestrol is very very low and it will get bad with out change.

Her diet is more a set of rules to go by than a diet. It is a life long thing so we don't focus on carb counts other than to go as low as you can. I shoot for about 10 per meal.

I am looking for a recipie for BBQ sauce. Any ideas?seawiks

Thank you for the links, I am type 2 and taking the 'little pill'. I'm not noticably over-weight, but I want to lose as much as I have to to control my blood sugar. I'm investigating the suggested low-carb plans. Until I decide on a complete plan, I'm just trying to go as low as I can and increase my activites/ exercise.I'm so glad I found this site, I am already appreciative for the information and support

Yep, pre-diabetic, syndrome x, insulin resistant, PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome)... lots of names for a similar set of symptoms. What ever they choose to call it, LC has improved my health tremendously.

I just read an article off of one of the posts listed above. It is at
http://www.mendosa.com/newsletter_july.htm

And talks about how transfatty acids have contributed to type 2 diabetes increases in women. The study is very interesting. I have switched from margerine to butter (I think most of us have) and I buy the crushed peanuts in stead of peanut butter. Crushed almonds are my first peanut butter substitution choice because they are better for you. I do like the real peanuts so I have occasionally used them. I have one article that says fats from the peanut itself are not bad. I am still looking at info on the subject.
