| Heh, I think bread's a no-no. Bread BAAAAAAD. Lobster GOOOOOD. This is my low-carb manichaean view of the universe. Honestly, I suppose there are some people that can low-carb and eat real bread regularly, too, and still lose weight. Somewhere. Maybe even some on this forum. Doesn't work for me, though. I went through my whole-grain phase years ago and learned my lesson.

| Doc, you crack me up! I'm sure the bread, as well as caffiene and sugar alcohols in a YMMV thing. I seem to always be on the "that stalls me" end of it. I do enjoy La Tortilla Factory Whole Wheat (L/C) Tortillas without any problems, though. You'd think bread is the most marvelous food known to man the way people go on about it. I've never been a big bread eater....I used to eat it just to keep the mayo on the meat off my hands. Now, I've grown up and use a knife and fork! Later!

| La Tortilla's low-carb tortillas aren't really whole wheat, though. They're made with wheat bran and a bunch of other stuff. The bulk of the wheat, the carb-rich part, has been reduced and replaced with other things. The same with low-carb bread -- most low-carb breads aren't really bread. Honestly, though, I couldn't stand eating too many low-carb tortillas or slices of bread. They still have a lot of carbs, but that's not even it. They just taste lousy. I need to enjoy the food I eat or this WOE won't work for me.

| Great replies, everyone! I had to put my .02 in also: Sirs: I just finished reading "Atkins Diet Gives Us New 'Scarlet Letter'" and I have to say, I am appalled. Other than just letting an irresponsible, uninformed writer vent her spleen, exactly what was the purpose of printing this? I and several people I know have had great success with a low carb lifestyle, and have lost weight, improved our health, and changed our lives. We are NOT LAZY. We exercise (I do Pilates, free weights and cardio), we eat responsibly and well, and we are well-informed as to the health ramifications of our food choices. Is bread the bad guy? Well, if you're talking about the bleached, empty, additive-laden junk that most Americans indulge in, then yes. I eat bread; but it's whole-grain and healthy. Have our ideas about what constitutes a healthy diet changed? Yep, it's called research, Ms. Crockett, and you ought to familiarize yourself with some. I have read every study on the subject I could get my hands on; so who is the lazy one here? The idea that adding exercise to a weight-loss regimen is her "innovative idea" is just breathtaking in its hubris. I found this article insulting and sloppy; hopefully, she will study her subject a bit more in the future before she offers her opinion. Thank you. Trina Nelson Poughkeepsie, NY

| OK, here's my email... David - This article is just plain silly. Did Ms. Crockett do any research or fact-finding WHATSOEVER? I think not by reading this article. "It is the holy sacrament of the church, is intoned in prayer, and even prisoners are not denied this most basic food staple." So what? What exactly does that prove? Let's not forget, our beloved USDA has been telling us to eat huge portions of grains for the better part of two decades and where has that gotten us? Epidemic levels of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes! "So the moral of the Atkins diet is stay away from carbs, let your body eat its own fat, and you get to be lazy." No, that's not it at all. Yes, some certainly start out that way, I did. The larger point is, once people adopt a low/lower carb diet they find a renewed energy and vigor for life that was missing from their daily existence. They find they aren't groggy when they wake up in the morning and they don't hit that "3 o'clock fog" in the afternoon. Being low carb actually gives them their life back. And eventually, many people DO introduce some type of exercise back into their lives because they HAVE THE ENERGY TO DO SO. Low carb is about giving yourself a chance. And this quote is the most frustrating and disturbing of all... "What bread has done to us to deserve this attack, I am not certain." That's exactly right, SHE IS NOT CERTAIN because she has NO idea what the heck she's talking about. I could possibly respect her if I saw evidence of research and reading before this article was written but I do not. Tell her to read a book called "The Schwarzbein Principal" by Dr. Diana Schwarzbein and perhaps she'll be a little more informed for her next slam on the low carb lifestyle. Or, you can have her call me and I'll answer whatever questions I can and give her a low carb lesson. Sincerely, Marcie Low Carb since 2001 I sent them my full name and number, we'll see what happens! ![]()

| "It is the holy sacrament of the church, is intoned in prayer, and even prisoners are not denied this most basic food staple." Let us not forget the belief that the bread is converted to protein! I've walked fat slob lazy me 55 miles so far this month. So this really ticked me off. |
