| Sep 30, 2004 01:00 ET Nine Out of Ten People in The United States Do Not Eat the Minimum Recommended Like fruits and vegetables, whole grains help lower your risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes and help you maintain a healthy body weight, yet nine out of ten Americans are not getting the recommended amount of whole grain each day. Now, a major food company is taking steps to help reverse the nation's whole grain deficit. The Big G cereal division of General Mills, known for Cheerios, Wheaties and Trix cereals, is announcing it will become the first leading food company to make all of its breakfast cereals with whole grain, providing Americans with more than 1.5 billion servings of whole grain per year without adding calories. Indeed, the General Mills announcement comes at a time when whole grain consumption in the U.S. is becoming a public health priority. The entire General Mills portfolio of big G cereals will now provide whole grain, and General Mills is the first food company that can make that claim.
