Default Blood sugar stabilizing Bar

Interesting article on a new Product that claims:

"These new sugar-free, low-carb ExtendBars are the first low-carb products designed to meet the complex nutritional needs of diabetics. They are the only snacks clinically proven to help prevent blood glucose highs and lows for up to nine hours."

Could be good for Syndrome X'ers as well.

I have a question, Rob; maybe there is something I'm missing here:
How are these bars different from others? If you go to their website, and click on "about Extendbar" and then on "nutritional information", it shows the ingredients. Maltitol is the second thing in there, and the rest of the ingredients look like alot of other bars out there. I thought Maltitol caused insulin spikes in some people, just like sugar? I seem to remember that from the "artificial sweetener experiment" thread from a while back.

Hey, it would be cool if they worked...I'm hypoglycemic, and if I go too long without eating, I get shaky and dizzy. These would be great to have stashed away, but the Maltitol thing makes me wonder...

Trina - Good question. This is a link that explains or at least verifies the first article.

Childrens Hospital

I will have to find these bars and check the ingredients list on teh package.. The extend website information included their regular extend bars as well as low carb bars. I'll check next time I'm at Walgreens.

Went to Walgreens today and tehy didn't have this bar in stock though they list it on their mail order website. I was surprised by the huge assortment of low carb products (more candy than anything else) they carry. I ended up getting 3 At LAst almond choco bars at .75 each. These have erythritol as the primary sweetener.

Trina, I'm hypoglycemic, too. I'll be interested in anything you and Rob find out.

I wish Walgreens had this bar in stock but the erythritol bars curbed my hunger for 6 hours at least. Erythritol is the only S.A. that works for me. In fact I ate dinner last night because of the hour not because of hunger. But then I haven't been diagnosed hypoglycemic. I do have blood sugar issues though which is why I ended up on this woe. I rarely buy the regular bars, usually a once a month treat. And the beginning of August was when I had the last bar before these. If the Extend bar proves to be as advertised what a great thing to have on hand for those times when you just can't get a low carb meal.

I'll have to look for those here as well...I don't do the lc bars all that much but the dh likes to try new ones...but he's not much of a malitol person and neither am I...but maybe this one would work for him...we found a bar the other day called a Jay-Z bar...all organic...no sugar alcohols and no artificial sweetners, either...it was 6 g of carbs...so to me, that was a little on the high side but not if you're going to use it as a meal replacement bar. He really liked it and I thought it tasted pretty good myself. he lked it so much, he went out and bought Organic Peanut Butter!

I read that article about the ExtendBar and I don't buy the argument. The bars contain cornstarch which is pretty high on the glycemic index scale and maltitol has the second highest glycemic index among all sugar alcohols. Throughout the article they kept saying that SOME of the patients experienced the beneficial effects of the bar. It sounded like all the claims are based on one study and the results were not very conclusive.

For now I am going to stick with Erythrol sweetener in chocolates. In addition to "At Last" bars, Walgreens also sells "Zero Carb" bars sweetened with erythrol. They were on sale last week for 59 cents. I got the whole box.

Cala - I have to agree with you. I wanted to experiment with the Extend bar to see if the claims were true for me. The erythritol bars are really marvelous as far as not affecting me adversely. Maltitiol is a complete disaster for me.
