I don't ususally promote charitable causes on the board, but this situation is so drastic I think we should all take a moment to see how we might help.

Be sure to donate only to established, non-profit organizations.

I just saw on CNN that the world-wide death toll may rise to as many as 60,000 people.

This is a great cause that's for sure.

My son's Godmother is from Sri Lanka. She went home for Christmas and Sunday morning I was scared to death when I heard about the tsunamis. I emailed her right away not knowing if she would have electricity of phone lines or anything but luckily she and her family were OK. She says that it is just horrid there right now being surrounded by death and destruction.

I heard on the radio that the Red Cross was accepting monetary donations. Money is so much more useful.....the funds can be wired to local banks and used to buy much needed relief supplies. It's really hard to get water and blankets from the U.S. to areas like Sri Lanka. I will be sending a donation soon.

I'm also donating at the Red Cross for the International Relief Fund. Amazon also has a link on their site.

Thanks Andrea! I heard a few minutes ago the death toll is approaching 80,000. I don't see how I could sleep if I didn't give something.

Just a quick note to let you know that if you go to church or have one near, that Church World Service is one charity where the overhead is virtually nil. They are organizing a massive effort right now to send medical personnel, equipment, and supplies. This is the link: www.churchworldservice.org

Here is another announcement about them from the National Council of Churches website.

Contributions to support this work may be sent to your denomination or to Church World Service, P.O. Box 968, Elkhart, IN, 46515. Contributions may also be made by credit card by calling: (800)-297-1516 ext. 222
Please designate contributions for emergency # 6970 SOUTHERN ASIA EARTHQUAKE-TIDAL WAVE EMERGENCY

Peace, Peg

I got a call on our phone tree tonight from my church and they will be having a special collection for the relief efforts as well as giving money themselves to the cause.

Every little bit helps. I may not have a lot to give but I will give what I can.

We don't have a lot to spare either, but after watching Primetime tonight, I kept a pen and paper nearby incase they had an address to send a donation to. I'll check out the links posted and figure out which one to send to. Thanks for posting those!!

Noel, it's great to know your son's Godmother is fine!!!!! What a relief!!!!

I don't know if anyone is taking clothing donations too, but I'll go through all of my clothes and pack them up if I can find out if anyone locally is taking them. Those poor people who have lost ALL their belongings are going to need all kinds of stuff.

Here's an address to send monetary donations to the Red Cross:
National Headquarters
2025 E Street, N.W.
Washington, DC 20006
www.redcross.org

I think I will donate there.

But then again, maybe not. I don't know.

I'm also looking into donating to Habitat for Humanity. Apparently they had some representatives over in Sri Lanka, but have not heard from them.
