| I've gotten to where I don't read any diet news. They all pretty well slam atkins and are close-minded to all the benefits and people it's helped. |

| I guess I didn't really read this as bashing. It's true, the news about dieting is discouraging, but that's not new. As to Atkins being cited as having one of the highest dropout rates, that wouldn't surprise me at all. Atkins has become synonymous with low-carb, and for many uninformed people, low-carb is equivalent to eating unlimited amounts of fats, meats, and cheeses without a vegetable in sight. Those folks are going to be disappointed with both their food and their weight loss, and are going to drop out. An interesting statistic would be to see how many of those who had READ THE BOOK and FOLLOWED THE ACTUAL PLAN stuck with it. I suspect it would be much higher. Aderyn |

| The stuck to it part is what makes the difference here...I didn't see this as negative per se, just true...those who stick to a diet all year long do better and the health benefits are greater over the long hault han those who don't. The longer you do any diet, the better yoiur chance of keeping the weight off is as well...If I were to stop now and go back to eating like I did a year and two days ago, I would never stay my current weight and size...That fact is lost on many dieters who think of it as a diet and not a life change...no matter which one you start...if you aren't willing to do it in some form forever...it isn't going to work much past the day you stop doing it!

| So many people have the wrong idea about Atkins that they say they are doing Atkins but have never picked up a book. Many eat just meat and cheese and barely any veggies and fruit. They don't look into alternatives for their favorite high carb things and tht is why they quit.

| Love seeing people at lunch in my office heating up bacon cheese burgers and downing diet cokes - the asking me "why am I not losing". I've gotten to the point were I just hold up my salad and say "read the 3rd edition of the book"

| This is my 2nd 'major' time around with Atkins - and I have a good friend who decided she wanted to do it with me. I told her to read the book, and she wouldn't. I have never been more annoyed in my life -- everyone (media, well meaning low fat guru's, dr's) THINK they know what the Atkins WOE is - but most of them when talking about it say 'no carb' no carb 'no carb'. This is not a NO carb way of life - it's LOW carb, and only for a while. I know I'm preaching to the choir - but sometimes I wish people would educate themselves BEFORE they open their mouths. |

| Hello everyone, I just found this web site. Great site by the way. I lillte bit about myself. I have been on Atkins since May 8, 2000. I started out weighting 234 lbs and I currently weight 164. I have lost 70 lbs eating the LC way. I just love it. But I hate when the media, or friend of family member degrates Atkins. I feel better and look a whole lot better. I still have about 25-30 more lbs to lose, but it will come off. Anyway, I glad I found this site. Have a wonderful LowCarb day, |

| As usual with this type of reporting, they don't give you all the info. WHY did the people quit any of the diets? And when they were assigned their diets, was any care given to what type of diet would be best for their individual body? For instance, if I were to be part of this study and put on that Vegetarian diet, I would quit in a week! Also I find it interesting at the very end of the article, it is reported that ONLY Weight Watches has any SCIENTIFIC studies backing it's program success. AARRGHH.

| Hey Laurina! Welcome to LCE! Come on over to the Atkins Ongoing Weight Loss board and tell us your story (you are obviously not a "newbie"!). I'm amazed at how many of us are re-inducting, some are returning members, some are new here. Tell the secret to your success! |

| Hi, Larina, and welcome aboard! I'll look forward to hearing more about your great success on Atkins so far. This a great group to be with. As others have said, it isn't news that people can't stick to a diet--whatever diet they choose. And when you quit your diet (whichever one) the weight somehow comes back! Big mystery? Sinister plot? False information? I don't think so. I've had a much better time (since 2003) thinking of low-carb as a lifestyle, or as we say a WOE, than a diet. Diets are boring! Diets are deprivation! Diets are temporary. None of that applies to The Atkins Lifestyle. Which isn't to say it's easy to stay focused, to stay the course. It isn't. If it were easy, nobody would be fat, and nobody would be jumping on the latest diet as though it were a lifeboat taking them to the ultimate shore, where they can jump off and live like they think "normal" people do. On the positive side, this article points out that lots of different diets--or eating plans--work for the people who continue to follow them. I love that bit about "kissing a few frogs." Haven't we all! Last edited by bkloots; 01-12-2005 at 03:02 PM. |
