Default Stress hormones and weight control - MSNBC articles discuss studies

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6737938/

This article and related linked articles discuss studies on the relationship between stress, stress hormones such as cortisol, and excess weight. Here are a selection of snippets.

Quote:
Research does support some link between stress and weight.
Quote:
In one study, cortisol levels increased with stress in both men and women, but the kind of stress that caused this reaction differed.
Quote:
Although advertisements for some herbal products claim to lower cortisol levels and bring rapid loss of large amounts of weight ? specifically from the waistline area ? no evidence from respected research studies exists to support these claims.
Quote:
To control stress and its influence on weight, researchers recommend other strategies. Kelly Brownell, Ph.D., of Yale University, proposes a two-pronged approach. By making life changes such as scaling back commitments, learning better time management, or becoming more assertive, he suggests, we can reduce our stress. ...

...Another way to counteract stress is to change our psychological response. Part of what makes challenging situations stressful is a feeling of hopelessness. If we explore different options for a situation, we may empower ourselves to overcome this feeling....
One of the linked articles discusses how insufficient sleep increases stress hormones and eating behavior.
Quote:
(from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6666225/)Losing sleep can raise levels of hormones linked with appetite and eating behavior, the researchers said.

Thanks for the info.

Another way to reduce stress, according to the 3/7 evening news:

Watch funny movies.

A new study involved checking the arteries of people before and after they engaged in periods of laughter, inspired usually by funny movies. There was a significant increase in the size of the arteries monitored, increasing blood flow throughout the body and reducing stress.

So...get out there today and have a good laugh!

What a great idea! I thought Shrek 2 was hilarious, but I haven't seen anything very funny since. Any suggestions for funny movies to rent?

Very interesting, Teel. I think my whole life can attest to this! Although very heavy as a child, I was able to lose weight at various stages. Looking back, all these stages were at happy times. The happier I was, the thinner I was. Current weight gain started with my Mother's death. Then my life turned around with a massive embezzlement by our accountant. More stress. More weight. Broken wrist, two operations, could not work = more stress = more weight. But slowly I have accepted my current "lot in life" (read less $$ and have to work) and my wrist healed, so my stress level has gone down. Then I found this site and Atkins. I can say I am happy again! I also remember an answer Barb Keith gave to one of my first posts on this site. She mentioned stress and cortisol levels!

The latest funny move I have seen is Robots...We laughed all evening last evening! Thanks Teel, that was a great article. I don't know about the stress specifically, but that seems to be the times when I had the greatest weight gain as well...but for me it was more specifically the reaction I had to the stressors that caused many pounds to be added to my frame...I have some work to do, but much of that has changed now. I react better for the most part and I am sleeping more than 5 hours a night too!
