Default The land of "no"????

Sometimes, ya get to hate something just because of the commercial chosen. The Dr. Seuss style Crestor commercials did it for me.

For those who might have missed it, the whole thing is some Green Eggs and Ham type of poem recited by a sappy voiced narrator who laments this poor woman's inability (in spite of her incessant running through the streets) to lower her cholesterol and get out of the "land of no" .... that is until the wonderful, new drug, Crestor came along.

And where, you may ask, IS the land of "no"? Well, according to the visuals on the commercials it is a state where she stands, sad-faced and drooling before a bakery window. Crestor, the doctor explains, can get her out of the land of "no." Implied: Now you can have pastry and still lower your cholesterol. Just take this new pill.

Now all statins carry the risk of serious, and not necessarily reversible, muscle and kidney damage. Well, guess what? Crestor leads the pack here, carrying a seven times greater risk of it.

Wonder if that's why I haven't been annoyed by that commercial in a while?

Yeah, I always bristled when I saw that commercial, too (even though the voice-over is Patrick Stewart, whom I think has a sexy voice). It's possible, given the whole Vioxx problem, that they have been re-thinking marketing this drug.
It's sad, really, that drug companies feel no guilt in down-playing the role of diet in good health. Understandable, maybe, but sad all the same.

One of my friends had a very serious problem from statins last summer. I don't know what brand of med she took, but it has really slowed her down. She's a retired professor of nursing, so she's seen a lot. Yet, she was ~very~ shaken by the experience.

OMG! That article sounds like something from the Onion. The proponent of this goofball idea is "Dr. Reckless????!!!"

Makes me glad to have a well, and the means to guard it from idiots like that.

I hear ya.

Isn't it amazing that people will pop any pill (and MANY pills) without any QUESTION as to how they might effect their body, health, etc. but tell them to eat more protein and less bread? What are you CRAAAAAZY? Eat more PROTEIN? A building block of the human body... NO way, I might die or something!

Oh, but I can take these 4 pills once a day and gorge on cheese danish? OK

Sure, there are many people who genuinely needs some meds but more and more and just think the docs, the "system", the "whatever" are just giving people pills and getting them "hooked" on "pharmaceutical consumerism"

I hate to sound like a conspiracy nut but come on. If everyone would just be told to eat a higher quality diet, more meat and veggies, good fats, and no processed crap. Then I think 75% of people wouldn't need ANY of those pills. But of course, Pfizer wouldn't like that
