Default Keeping weight off is the true challenge

The Dallas Morning News published an article on the front of the Living section Tuesday that isn't a surprise to any of us that have been at this for a while. One of the things that I found interesting (and have also found true) is their statement that:
Quote:
A group can also provide the encouragement that might get lost when reflections in the mirror look the same every day.
and
Quote:
people are more successful at keeping weight off if they stay with some kind of organized program, or don't abandon the support structure that helped them lose the weight to begin with.

Available data suggest that losing weight and keeping it off should almost be viewed as two distinct endeavors.
Amen.
Quote:
"Given that we are far more successful in producing weight loss than in maintaining weight loss, it is ironic that most of our research and our resources are still directed toward producing weight loss," Dr. Hill and his colleagues wrote this month in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
This is something I've stewed about for years! Weight control researchers complain that they cannot get funded for weight maintenance studies. Alas, there's not much money to be made in the weight maintenance arena, while there is tons of money being made in the weight loss field. In fact, most commercial weight loss programs benefit financially when their users regain weight, and again go into weight loss mode. Which is kind of sick, when you think about it.

This is all very true. I have not found it possible in Aus to log into a weight management forum that is not attached to marketing and this is a real concern for me. I appreciate that these forums cost money and time to run - but so do the government ads currently airing on Aus national television that are encouraging us to eat 2 fruits and 5 veg daily! My concern is that some people may not realise they can manage their weight without buying lots of new products (some of these are good, of course, but on a pension, its just not always financially viable)

I would like to thank everyone on here who has welcomed me. It's not easy to broach forums based in another country (believe me!) Everyone here has been very kind - but if one is shy (or aging) - its a very scary exercise! I can only hope there are Aussies who lurk around reading this forum and who will take the plunge and start talking with us all. If you are out there - please be brave and talk to us - I'm convinced this support is vital to success and longterm weight management!

Thanks again - and best wishes to all.

Beachfox, I've noticed a number of LCE regulars posting from overseas. That's one thing about the Internet - it's bringing us together in ways that were never possible in the past.

Its great isn't it Teelbee I'm very interested in global communication in such formats as the forum - I cannot help but believe it will promote understanding and goodwill on an international scale.

Teel, Beachfox, I have to agree with both of you....it's great to get input from other parts of the world. In Canada there are very few low carb products except maybe the bars which we all shy away from. If it wasn't for this site, I would probably never have made it to goal. Everyone here keeps me on the straight and narrow. When I decided to try low carb eating I read everything I could about it and visited every web site I could find for different recipes. I think that's important so I don't get bored with this woe. I eat good healthy foods so maybe it's good that I can't get the low carb products that are available in the states. I must visit this site 5 or 6 times a day to see what's new and to give me support. Thanks to everyone here!

Good article. Interesting info about why there aren't many post weigh loss studies as well.

Quote:
the psychological boosts from weight maintenance are less fulfilling than those of weight loss. After a while, people stop mentioning how great you look. The newness wears off.
I have found this to be true even before getting to goal. When I had lost my first 50 pounds I was showered with encouragement everyday. Then it slowed. I can imagine that after reaching goal I will miss the comments of "wow, you've done so well" from people I see.

This site is a great place to come for encouragement though. So I know I always have a place to come to feel good about my efforts.

Yes Noel - this is quite right. After a while the newness of it all does wear off. I must admit to having a life long passion for fashion - all of my family have been involved in garment making and design and in fact, in early Australia settlement (late 18th and mid 19th century) my great grandmother used to sew dresses by hand and also bead them for people. Although I don't sew dresses by hand - I do quilt and sew other things by hand (I keep promising myself I'll do a dress!) I generally visit my seamstress every week to see what she has ready for me - and I NEVER FAIL to get a roaring rush of well being each time I put something on that looks good now! Also - the ongoing energy and ability to focus etc is just fantastic and the other benefits of stronger hair (I can actually grow mine again!) and nails is such a morale booster. I even find my feet and hands are slimmer! And a lot of my jewellery that used to fit around my neck is just too low now. I guess these are the flowon effects that we probably need to identify and start raising the awareness about? It has been my experience that if markets start picking up on these matters the general consumer process tends to push right through into research and policy areas. This would be SO good for our interests eh? And it would help to motivate and inspire people to enter into the maintainance programs. I think it might also help to avoid crash dieting - which I don't believe is sustainable or healthy.

Just realised I'd missed tiashanty's post - and I used to live in BC and all - fancy missing that post! Yes, I love the international aspect of it all - and it is very helpful to see the lowcarb items available elsewhere - because it does provide ideas. And yes, I totally agree, its VERY important not to get bored with this WOE - but also to have variety for metabolism's sake? I often type my main ingredient into Google and then substitute in a recipe if it looks too high in anything I'm watching - that way I've always got something new to eat and cook. If I cook the same recipe ALL the time - I find myself adding a bit more of this that I like - or a bit more of that - until suddenly its 'whoa - getting out of line here fox!' So using different recipes help there too.

hey ivana! nice to meet you!
it might be a blessing in disguise to NOT have low-carb products...
you are FAR far better off with eating fresh veggies and meats and poultry and cheese... fish.. berries..

you DONT need the products to do this... in fact... it MIGHT be easier than you think!

Hi Ivana - welcome to the forum. I have a friend in Belgrade.

I'm from Australia - and I don't buy any prepackaged lowcarb products at all - we have very few of them - and those we do have are too high in other elements that are not desirable for me. I'm into fresh and minimally processed foods and it works wonderfully for me.

Hope to hear more from you. best wishes.

Welcome Ivana...I too avoid the products and just eat minimally processed foods and I like them even better if they are fresh and in their natural state...especially vegetables. It is easy to fall into the "treat trap" when they are readily available. Visit here often for support and help! I attribute my success to the wonderful people here who kept me on track when I wanted to stray!
