| I was interested to see how many articles I can pull in regards to the "positive"comments on Atkins' Diet. Look what I got, I hope I did not duplicate anybody's postings. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/518645 The second study is nice too; it describes the benifits of the LCD and mentions only a few side effects of the Atkins' Diet, such as headaches and constipation ( boy, the last one is so much true, Miralax someone, please!!!)AND.. The low-carb diet is NOT desregarded any longer in our society ( the low fat diet was the ONE always) and is important controller of cholesterol levels , HTN , and DM. The point is that we CANNOT desregard LCD any longer ( as a society). 60% of Americans are overweight, and this is very sad. I am amaized of how well Dr. Atkins described the wonderful ways of weight loss on low-carb diet, and how one can start feeling better, more energetic, healthier, and just enjoy life AGAIN. This happened to me since get-go, I am only on my 7 day of induction, but I feel much much better. I choose this diet because it make sense , and the results are amazing... http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/477732 ( *The second item was posted here before, but since it was over a year ago, some newer members may have missed it. | Rafaella, I'll come back to the articles when I have a little more time. For now, though, a word about constipation. Adding FIBER to regular food is a better long-term solution than pills or powders. Look up recipes for cereals and muffins containing ground flaxseed. Flaxseed is very good for you, can be added to salads and shakes as well. Just be careful to go easy on quantity at first, as it can be a fairly powerful laxative. |

Barb, Thanks a lot. I have noticed, One of my co-workers take flax seed at work to lower her cholesterol. I have to look into it. So, the health store have the flax seed flour or mix? Thanks.

At health food groceries, you can buy flax seed in bulk. You can also buy ground flax seed (flaxseed meal). However, for freshness, grinding your own works best. I use a cheapo coffee grinder, and grind what I need as I use it. Ground flax seed is best stored in the fridge or freezer.

So, I guess, the supplement does not work the same way flax seed ( the real thing ) does. I will look into it, Barb. Thanks. Again, you can cook with flax flour, right? Is there such a flour? I thought, someone said there was one.

I don't know much about so-called fiber supplements, like Metamucil and so forth, so I can't answer your question about how they work, as compared to food fibers. I do know you can measure the fiber content of foods in grams. The standard recommendation is about 20-25 grams of fiber per day for women. Ground flax seed is just about 100% fiber, its other nutrient content being oil--a healthy veggie oil. Put flax seed (two words) into fitday.com and you'll find out the nutrients. Ground flax seed is a flour-like substance that can be used in cooking. I'm not an experienced baker, so you'll have to look up recipes elsewhere. I use it to make some muffin-like thingies that taste good, and for a cereal I heat up in the microwave. Here's the recipe for that: 1/4 cup ground flax seed 1/4 cup wheat bran (NOT whole wheat) 1 scoop (28 gms) whey protein (Vanilla flavor, presweetened with something not sugar) Mix together, and stir in 1 cup water Microwave for one minute, stir, and micro for another minute. Add whatever you like--berries, sugar-free syrup, nuts, cream, etc.

Barb, that sounds delicious. After my induction phase, I will try it. I have decided to do my induction phase for another 2 weeks, to total of 1 month. I am doing ok, and hoping to loose more weight. I did not weight myself yet, and will post my weight in a few days ( after 2 completed weeks of induction). I am checking out the recipe for flax seeds. Thanks, Barb a lot.
