Default Banning whole milk in school

A recent news article says that some schools are considering banning whole milk because of the fat content, but allowing baked chips, like baked Cheetos. Doesn't make a lot of sense. They should be more concerned about NOT feeding children junk food like Cheetos, baked or not. Baked Cheetos are made with cornmeal, have maltodextrin and dextrose. 19 grams of carbs and NO FIBER! So they must not use whole grain corn. 2 grams of protein and 5 of fat. Why not give the kids fresh vegetables instead??? Or fruit?

Restaurants are just as bad. "Kids" menus are usually hamburgers and fries, grilled cheese sandwiches on white bread and fries, chicken nuggets and fries, etc. No grilled meat, no fresh veggies, no salad. If they offer fruit, it's usually applesauce. My kids loved salad, my grandson adores salad, especially the tomatoes. Every kid's menu should have the option of a small salad or a dish of raw veggies with a dip like ranch dressing.

That's my rant for the day. I'm all done for now.

You are right about the kids menus. My son is very picky so he won't touch a fry with a ten foot pole but also won't eat a lot of other food. So I generally don't even try and have the chef make something special, which is why we only go to a few places.

When I was in school we never had cheetos, baked or not, but one high school I went to had a burger line so you could have burger and fries every day if you wanted...not good thing.

- Baked cheetos contain the following ingredients:

ENRICHED CORN MEAL (CORN MEAL, FERROUS SULFATE, NIACIN, THIAMIN MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, AND FOLIC ACID), VEGETABLE OIL (CONTAINS ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING: CORN, SOYBEAN OR SUNFLOWER OIL), WHEY, CHEDDAR CHEESE (CULTURED MILK, SALT, ENZYMES), SALT, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL, MALTODEXTRIN, NATURAL FLAVOR, DEXTROSE, MALIC ACID, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, SOUR CREAM (CULTURED CREAM, NONFAT MILK), ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, BETA-CAROTENE, MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE, LACTIC ACID, ARTIFICIAL COLORS (INCLUDING YELLOW 6), AND CITRIC ACID. CONTAINS MILK INGREDIENTS.

At least I don't see partially hydrogenated oils (trans fats) in that list. 1 ounce is 19 carbs with zero fiber.

Rob, you may want to check the "partially hydrogenated soybean oil" burried in the middle of the ingredients list.

At my school, I am just floored everytime I look at the menu. We have 6th graders weighing in at 300 pds. It is sad. In Hawaii we have Wiki and lunch. Meaning you can eat at 10:00 and again at 12:15. WHo needs to eat twice at school. We also are looking at eliminating vitamin D milk. WHat a joke. Todays menu "Teri Burger (burger in gravey) fries and a slice of an orange." Healthy. The milk is probably all the vitamins they will get. Anyway, just my two cents.

You can give the kids 2% milk and still keep the vitamins in milk, right?

QueenMama,

I agree that what is offered to children is cr*p!!! We only drink whole orgainc raw milk here.....

It's all the fake/junk food that is ruining our kids...I am passionate about this because I can see my son's generation having a decreased life span with sodas/sugary junk food (if you can even call it food!) in school. Milk is not making the kids fat for goodness sake.

Roach- as for the 2% question....I don't think the body absorbs the added vitamins very well (according to the research I have read) Also fake foods actually leach your body of nutrients making you aborb even smaller amounts of vitamins.
