| http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060313/...ocysteine_dc_4 But just a few days later, this article says that since folic acid has been added to food to protect unborn babies, there has been a dramatic decrease in strokes: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060313/...roke_deaths_dc Who do you believe?

| Well, I sort of believe them both, Nita. I see science as a process, by which we try to approximate a fact. The studies are very different. One a statistical retrospective and one an actual, control group, clinical study, but on a small number of subjects (all of whom are part of an existing sub-set). Seems to me that (based on these and other studies) the jury is still out on both folic acid and homocystine tests with respect to vascular issues.

| Yeah - my interpretation of science is also that its a process - whereby we gather facts, assess them and in a perfect world, adjust/adapt the practice and consequently progress. Obviously, yes, the studies do vary in both content and concept. The issues surrounding science/research that alway concern me are - who funded the research and in whose best interest is the outcome directed/focused? My initial response into any scientific report is to ascertain those 2 points and my next response is to look at the scientist who undertook the research/studies and also any scientific community reactions/response to the report - in my experience, there is a lot of competition between scientists! Which is OK - except when it degrades the scientific progress and/or distorts the outcomes! |

| I would say there is a variable in one or both of the studies that hasn't been considered. Perhaps more studies are needed to determine what is causing conflicting results.
