Default Gastrointestinal Surgery & Blindness

A possible link between stomach and intestinal surgeries and blindness due to the body's inability to absorb Vitamin A, which is vital for eye health. With the insane increase in gastric bypass surgery, will we see a generation of blind or near blind people?

I just told my friend that had the surgery done about this. She is notorious for not taking her extra vitamins. But who knows if they dont absorb what will happen.

You know, I can well imagine gastric bypass surgery could lead to a host of long term complications due to nutritional deficiences.

That said, reduced night vision and dry eye are very common among older people (about 50 years and older). I have both symptoms myself and I've never had gastro intestinal surgery. The 3 cases described in the article were older adults who might well have had such vision problems anyway.

I do find it interesting that vitamin A injection improved the situation for 2 of them. Perhaps I'll ask my doctors about this.
