Arrow Newsflash! (lol!)

I tuned into our local (Dallas/Ft.Worth) news tonight to hear the scoop about how people are "effectively sculpting their bodies". Turns out it was about liposuction....and how even skinny people are having "just a few ounces" of fat removed here and there. Whatever. But I stayed tuned in.....and this "newsflash" is what soon followed:

The last line is what really made me laugh: ".......although it raises questions about the role of refined sugar."

HELLO!! Wake up and smell the coffee...which is also supposed to good for you now.

Take care, all who read this....and have that perfectly marbled steak...it won't kill you!

The "role of refined sugar".....hmmm, I guess that

1. It tastes good
2. It's highly addictive
3. Rots your teeth
4. Causes obesity
5. Makes kids bounce off the walls

Yeah, sugar plays a huge role, just not the role I want.

Wouldn't Dr. Atkins be proud to see his research vindicated?

I liked the info from the dietitian, who appeared to have actually (gasp!) READ the book! It was nice to finally see someone refer to the maintenance program as being less extreme than the early phase, instead of the usual "Atkins allows no carbs" drivel.

"Maybe we SHOULD look into this sugar thing....."

Well, duh! I'm just wondering what rock they've been hiding under!

I wasn't so well-versed in lowcarb eating back in 1997-1998 when my then best friend decided to do a NO CARB diet that her Primary care doc told her to do. "Just avoid carbs. Period." he said. So, she quit drinking (HELLO!!) and only ate 5-6 carbs per day and dropped about 75 pounds in 9 months. Yeah....and gained it all back plus some. There is always a right way AND a wrong way to do things.

I said all that to say this: there is a well-proven SCIENCE/BIOLOGICAL reason that limiting carbohydrate intake works as a weight loss tool.

My advice to the people who are "haters" of the Atkins/South Beach/low-carb-in-general-plans: You don't have to like it, but just don't hate it for the sake of hating what you aren't doing.
Lots of people have lost weight on low-fat, Weight Watchers, and Slimfast plans, among many others. Pick on you can live with as a lifestyle, stick to it, and if it works for you, fabulous! If not, join the rest of us who may or may not have an addiction to sugar and may or not be insulin resistant....this is about working with our bodies, not taking sides. 'Nuf said.

Great article Maxibee! I totally agree. It's always nice to see medical studies that support low carb! It is healthy, and it works!

Thanks, Maxi.

The same study was reported in slightly more detail on Medscape. For those who might be interested, I posted a link here.

Great article Maxie. I think all these additives that are in food now are what making us all fat. I cannot eat from a salad bar in a restaurant because of the additives they put on all the stuff because it causes me to have severe stomach cramps and (you know what).....
And also serving sizes are so big now that its enough for three people anymore. Do you know that a big mac hamburger has almost 1000 calories in it.
Anyway, whats up with so many fast food places being built everyday around our nation! Doesn't anyone cook anymore for themselves! Have we become that lazy!

I never have been a fast food person anyway, well not much, always loved home cooking and still do. And for the low carb, I think its the best thing that has ever happened to me, just wish I knew of it when I was younger.
